ಸಹ ವಸತಾಮಪ್ಯಸತಾಂ: ಜೊತೆಗಿದ್ದರೂ ಅಂಟದ, ದೂರವಿದ್ದರೂ ಅರಳುವ

ಒಂದೇ ಕೋಣೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ವರ್ಷಗಟ್ಟಲೆ ಇದ್ದ ಸಹಪಾಠಿಗಳು ಬೇರೆಯಾದ ಮೇಲೆ ಒಂದು ಕರೆಯನ್ನೂ ಮಾಡದಿರುವುದುಂಟು. ಬೇರೆ ಊರಿನ ಗೆಳೆಯ ವರ್ಷಕ್ಕೊಮ್ಮೆ ಮಾತನಾಡಿದರೂ ಹಿಂದಿನ ಆತ್ಮೀಯತೆ ಹಾಗೆಯೇ ಇರುತ್ತದೆ.

ಈ ಆರ್ಯಾ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಇದೇ ಮಾತನ್ನು ಎರಡು ಹೂವುಗಳ ಚಿತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ಹೇಳುತ್ತದೆ.

ಸುಭಾಷಿತ (IAST)

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ

ಸಹ (सह, saha) = ಜೊತೆಗೆ (together)
ವಸತಾಮಪ್ಯಸತಾಂ (वसतामप्यसतां, vasatāmapyasatāṃ) = ವಾಸಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದರೂ ಸಹ ದುರ್ಜನರಿಗೆ (even for the wicked who live together)
ಜಲರುಹಜಲವದ್ಭವತ್ಯಸಂಶ್ಲೇಷಃ (जलरुहजलवद्भवत्यसंश्लेषः, jalaruhajalavadbhavatyasaṃśleṣaḥ) = ಕಮಲ ಮತ್ತು ನೀರಿನಂತೆ ಅಂಟಿಕೊಳ್ಳದಿರುವಿಕೆ ಇರುತ್ತದೆ (there is no clinging, like that of lotus and water)
ದೂರೇಽಪಿ (दूरेऽपि, dūre’pi) = ದೂರದಲ್ಲಿದ್ದರೂ (even when far away)
ಸತಾಂ (सतां, satāṃ) = ಸಜ್ಜನರಿಗೆ (for the good)
ವಸತಾಂ (वसतां, vasatāṃ) = ವಾಸಿಸುವವರಿಗೆ (who dwell)
ಪ್ರೀತಿಃ (प्रीतिः, prītiḥ) = ಪ್ರೀತಿ (affection)
ಕುಮುದೇಂದುವದ್ಭವತಿ (कुमुदेन्दुवद्भवति, kumudenduvadbhavati) = ನೈದಿಲೆ ಮತ್ತು ಚಂದ್ರನಂತೆ ಇರುತ್ತದೆ (is like that of the night lotus and the moon)

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)

ದುರ್ಜನರು ಜೊತೆಯಲ್ಲೇ ವಾಸಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದರೂ ಕಮಲ ಮತ್ತು ನೀರಿನಂತೆ ಅವರ ನಡುವೆ ಅಂಟಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವಿಕೆ ಇರುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಸಜ್ಜನರು ದೂರದಲ್ಲಿ ವಾಸಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದರೂ ಅವರ ಪ್ರೀತಿ ನೈದಿಲೆ ಮತ್ತು ಚಂದ್ರನಂತೆ ಇರುತ್ತದೆ.

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)

Even when the wicked live together, there is no clinging between them, as between the lotus and water. Even when the good live far apart, their affection is like that of the night lotus and the moon.

ಈ ಸುಭಾಷಿತದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this subhashita

ಜಲರುಹ ಎಂದರೆ ನೀರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಹುಟ್ಟಿದ್ದು, ಅಂದರೆ ಕಮಲ. ಕಮಲ ನೀರಿನಲ್ಲೇ ಇರುತ್ತದೆ, ಆದರೆ ಅದರ ಎಲೆಯ ಮೇಲೆ ನೀರು ಅಂಟುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಅಸಂಶ್ಲೇಷ ಎಂದರೆ ಅಂಟಿಕೊಳ್ಳದಿರುವಿಕೆ.

Jalaruha means born in water, that is, the lotus. The lotus lives in water, yet water does not cling to its leaf. Asamshlesha means the absence of clinging.

ಕುಮುದ ಎಂದರೆ ರಾತ್ರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಅರಳುವ ನೈದಿಲೆ. ಚಂದ್ರ ಆಕಾಶದಲ್ಲಿ ಬಹುದೂರದಲ್ಲಿದ್ದರೂ ಅವನ ಉದಯಕ್ಕೆ ಈ ಹೂವು ಅರಳುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂಬುದು ಕವಿಗಳ ಹಳೆಯ ಕಲ್ಪನೆ. ದೂರದ ಪ್ರೀತಿಗೆ ಅದೇ ಉಪಮೆ.

Kumuda is the night lotus. That it opens at the moon’s rising, though the moon is far away in the sky, is an old poetic fancy. It serves here as the image of affection across distance.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today

ಜೊತೆಗಿರುವುದು ಮತ್ತು ಹತ್ತಿರವಿರುವುದು ಬೇರೆ ಬೇರೆ ಎಂದು ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ನೆನಪಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಸಂಬಂಧದ ಆಳ ಭೇಟಿಗಳ ಸಂಖ್ಯೆಯಿಂದ ತಿಳಿಯುವುದಿಲ್ಲ.

The verse reminds us that being together and being close are different things. The depth of a bond is not told by the number of meetings.

ಇದು ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯ ಚಿತ್ರ ಮಾತ್ರ. ಎಲ್ಲ ಸಂಬಂಧಗಳೂ ಹೀಗೆಯೇ ಇರುತ್ತವೆ ಎಂದು ಭಾವಿಸಬೇಕಿಲ್ಲ, ಮತ್ತು ದೂರವಿರುವ ಗೆಳೆತನಕ್ಕೆ ಒಮ್ಮೊಮ್ಮೆ ಒಂದು ಕರೆಯ ನೀರೂ ಬೇಕಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.

This is only a general picture. We need not assume every bond is like this, and even a distant friendship sometimes needs the water of a phone call.
