ಸ್ವಸ್ಥಾನಾದಪಿ ವಿಚಲತಿ: ತನ್ನವರ ರಕ್ಷಣೆಗೆ ಮೈನಾಕನಂತೆ ಇಳಿಯುವವನು

ತನ್ನ ಕುರ್ಚಿ, ತನ್ನ ಹುದ್ದೆ, ತನ್ನ ಗೌರವ ಇವನ್ನು ಬಿಟ್ಟುಕೊಡಲು ಬಹುತೇಕರಿಗೆ ಕಷ್ಟ. ಆದರೆ ತನ್ನವರ ಮೇಲೆ ಸಂಕಟ ಬಂದಾಗ ಕೆಲವರು ಅದನ್ನೆಲ್ಲ ಬಿಟ್ಟು ಇಳಿದು ಬರುತ್ತಾರೆ.

ಅಂಥವರನ್ನು ಈ ಆರ್ಯಾ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಮೈನಾಕ ಪರ್ವತಕ್ಕೆ ಹೋಲಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ

ಸ್ವಸ್ಥಾನಾದಪಿ (स्वस्थानादपि, svasthānādapi) = ತನ್ನ ಸ್ಥಾನದಿಂದಲೂ (even from his own place)
ವಿಚಲತಿ (विचलति, vicalati) = ಕದಲುತ್ತಾನೆ (moves away)
ಮಜ್ಜತಿ (मज्जति, majjati) = ಮುಳುಗುತ್ತಾನೆ (sinks)
ಜಲಧೌ (जलधौ, jaladhau) = ಸಾಗರದಲ್ಲಿ (in the ocean)
ಚ (च, ca) = ಮತ್ತು (and)
ನೀಚಮಪಿ (नीचमपि, nīcamapi) = ಕೀಳಾದವನನ್ನೂ (even the lowly)
ಭಜತೇ (भजते, bhajate) = ಆಶ್ರಯಿಸುತ್ತಾನೆ (resorts to)
ನಿಜಪಕ್ಷರಕ್ಷಣಮನಾಃ (निजपक्षरक्षणमनाः, nijapakṣarakṣaṇamanāḥ) = ತನ್ನ ಪಕ್ಷವನ್ನು ಕಾಯುವ ಮನಸ್ಸಿನವನಾಗಿ (intent on protecting his own side, or his own wings)
ಸುಜನೋ (सुजनो, sujano) = ಸಜ್ಜನನು (the good man)
ಮೈನಾಕಶೈಲ (मैनाकशैल, mainākaśaila) = ಮೈನಾಕ ಪರ್ವತ (the mountain Mainaka)

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)

ಸಜ್ಜನನು ತನ್ನ ಪಕ್ಷದವರನ್ನು ಕಾಯುವ ಮನಸ್ಸಿನವನು. ಅದಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಮೈನಾಕ ಪರ್ವತದಂತೆ ತನ್ನ ಸ್ಥಾನದಿಂದಲೂ ಕದಲುತ್ತಾನೆ, ಸಾಗರದಲ್ಲಿ ಮುಳುಗುತ್ತಾನೆ, ಕೀಳಾದವನನ್ನೂ ಆಶ್ರಯಿಸುತ್ತಾನೆ.

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)

The good man is set on protecting his own side. For that, like the mountain Mainaka, he moves even from his own place, sinks into the ocean, and resorts even to the lowly.

ಈ ಸುಭಾಷಿತದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this subhashita

ಪಕ್ಷ ಎಂಬ ಪದಕ್ಕೆ ರೆಕ್ಕೆ ಮತ್ತು ಪಂಗಡ ಎಂಬ ಎರಡೂ ಅರ್ಥ ಇವೆ. ಇದೇ ಶ್ಲೋಕದ ಶ್ಲೇಷೆ. ಮೈನಾಕನಿಗೆ ರೆಕ್ಕೆಯನ್ನು ಕಾಯುವುದು, ಸಜ್ಜನನಿಗೆ ತನ್ನವರನ್ನು ಕಾಯುವುದು.

The word paksha means both wing and side. That is the verse’s pun. For Mainaka it is protecting his wings, for the good man protecting his own people.

ಇಂದ್ರನು ಪರ್ವತಗಳ ರೆಕ್ಕೆ ಕತ್ತರಿಸುವಾಗ ಮೈನಾಕ ಸಮುದ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ಅಡಗಿ ರೆಕ್ಕೆ ಉಳಿಸಿಕೊಂಡ ಎಂಬ ಪುರಾಣ ಕಥೆ ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ಧವಾಗಿದೆ. ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಆ ಕಥೆಯನ್ನು ಸೂಚಿಸುತ್ತಿದೆ ಎಂದು ಭಾವಿಸಿದ್ದೇವೆ.

It is well known from the Puranas that Mainaka hid in the sea and saved his wings when Indra clipped the wings of the mountains. We take the verse to be pointing to that story.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today

ತನ್ನ ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಯ ಹಿತಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಹಿರಿಯ ವೈದ್ಯ ತನ್ನ ಹುದ್ದೆಯ ಗತ್ತನ್ನು ಬದಿಗಿಟ್ಟು ಕೆಳಗಿನವರ ಬಳಿಗೂ ಹೋಗಿ ವಿಚಾರಿಸುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಅದು ಸಣ್ಣತನ ಅಲ್ಲ, ಹೊಣೆಗಾರಿಕೆ.

For the good of his student, a senior doctor sets aside the airs of his post and goes to ask even those below him. That is not smallness, it is responsibility.

ನೀಚರನ್ನು ಆಶ್ರಯಿಸುವುದು ಯಾವಾಗಲೂ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯದು ಎಂದು ಶ್ಲೋಕದ ಅರ್ಥವಲ್ಲ. ತನ್ನ ಸ್ವಾರ್ಥಕ್ಕಲ್ಲ, ತನ್ನವರ ರಕ್ಷಣೆಗೆ ಎಂಬ ಉದ್ದೇಶ ಇದ್ದಾಗ ಮಾತ್ರ ಈ ಹೊಗಳಿಕೆ ಹೊಂದುತ್ತದೆ.

The verse does not mean that resorting to the lowly is always good. The praise fits only when the aim is protecting one’s own, and not self-interest.
