Context and commentary on verse 1.1

This is the only verse in the whole Gita spoken by Dhritarashtra. Most of the other verses are the words of Krishna and Arjuna, and the lines that hold the story together belong to Sanjaya. The scene sits in the Bhishma Parva of the Mahabharata. On the tenth day of the war Sanjaya comes to Hastinapura with the news that Bhishma has fallen, and Dhritarashtra asks him to tell everything from the beginning. Tradition holds that Sanjaya saw and heard the battlefield through the divine sight given to him by Vyasa.

Commentators pay special attention to two words in the question. The first is mamakah, my own. The Pandavas are the sons of Dhritarashtra’s own brother, yet in his words they are the others. Many read the root of the war in this very split between mine and theirs. The second is dharmakshetra, the field of dharma. Madhusudana Saraswati explains that the question also carries a hidden worry: had the holy ground changed his sons’ minds, and had the war been called off?

The first word of the Gita is dharma. The last word of the last verse of the eighteenth chapter is mama, mine. Tradition keeps a lovely observation that joins the two: the whole Gita turns around the question mama dharma, what is my dharma?

For life today

Dhritarashtra has no sight. But the blindness in this question is of another kind. Everyone standing on that field belongs to his own household, and still, in his mouth, they become two groups.

Cracks in a family rarely begin with a big quarrel. They begin with a small word like this one. Whether it is the division of property or a decision to be taken beside a hospital bed, the smaller the circle of our own people, the harder the conversation becomes. Think about it: how often does mamakah come into our own speech?
