Context and commentary on verse 1.13

Sridhara Swami explains that seeing the commander’s zeal, the whole army caught the fever of battle. The panava is a small drum, the anaka a skin-covered kettledrum, and the gomukha a horn shaped like a cow’s mouth. Translations differ a little about the exact form of these instruments.

Sahasa eva, all at once. No one waited his turn; everything sounded together. The word Sanjaya uses for this sound is tumula, a loud and confused din. Many observe that the difference becomes clear when this is set beside the way he describes the Pandava conches in the nineteenth verse.

For life today

Noise is a good cover for inner doubt. When everyone shouts together, no one needs to ask what is in anyone’s mind.

The enthusiasm of a crowd spreads fast. But the fact that it spreads does not mean it is heading the right way. When the noise dies down, what remains are the questions each of us has to carry alone.
