ತಸ್ಯ ಸಂಜನಯನ್ಹರ್ಷಂ ಕುರುವೃದ್ಧಃ ಪಿತಾಮಹಃ ।
ಸಿಂಹನಾದಂ ವಿನದ್ಯೋಚ್ಚೈಃ ಶಂಖಂ ದಧ್ಮೌ ಪ್ರತಾಪವಾನ್ ॥ 12 ॥
ಶ್ಲೋಕ (ದೇವನಾಗರಿ)
तस्य सञ्जनयन्हर्षं कुरुवृद्धः पितामहः ।
सिंहनादं विनद्योच्चैः शङ्खं दध्मौ प्रतापवान् ॥ 12 ॥
ಶ್ಲೋಕ (IAST)

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ
- ತಸ್ಯ (तस्य, tasya) = ಅವನಿಗೆ, ಅಂದರೆ ದುರ್ಯೋಧನನಿಗೆ (his, Duryodhana’s)
- ಸಂಜನಯನ್ (सञ्जनयन्, sañjanayan) = ಉಂಟುಮಾಡುತ್ತಾ (causing, raising)
- ಹರ್ಷಮ್ (हर्षम्, harṣam) = ಹರ್ಷವನ್ನು, ಹುಮ್ಮಸ್ಸನ್ನು (joy, spirits)
- ಕುರುವೃದ್ಧಃ (कुरुवृद्धः, kuruvṛddhaḥ) = ಕುರುವಂಶದ ಹಿರಿಯ (the eldest of the Kurus)
- ಪಿತಾಮಹಃ (पितामहः, pitāmahaḥ) = ಅಜ್ಜ (the grandfather)
- ಸಿಂಹನಾದಮ್ (सिंहनादम्, siṃhanādam) = ಸಿಂಹಗರ್ಜನೆಯನ್ನು (a lion’s roar)
- ವಿನದ್ಯ (विनद्य, vinadya) = ಮೊಳಗಿಸಿ (sounding)
- ಉಚ್ಚೈಃ (उच्चैः, uccaiḥ) = ಗಟ್ಟಿಯಾಗಿ (loudly)

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ಆಗ ಕುರುವಂಶದ ಹಿರಿಯರೂ ಪ್ರತಾಪಶಾಲಿಗಳೂ ಆದ ಅಜ್ಜ ಭೀಷ್ಮರು ದುರ್ಯೋಧನನಿಗೆ ಹುಮ್ಮಸ್ಸು ತುಂಬಲು ಸಿಂಹದಂತೆ ಗಟ್ಟಿಯಾಗಿ ಗರ್ಜಿಸಿ ತಮ್ಮ ಶಂಖವನ್ನು ಊದಿದರು.
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)
Then the valiant grandfather Bhishma, eldest of the Kurus, roared loudly like a lion and blew his conch, to raise Duryodhana’s spirits.
ಶ್ಲೋಕ 1.12ರ ವಿವರಣೆContext and commentary on verse 1.12
ದುರ್ಯೋಧನ ಮಾತಾಡಿದ್ದು ದ್ರೋಣರೊಡನೆ. ಉತ್ತರಿಸಿದವರು ಭೀಷ್ಮರು. ಅವರು ವಾದಕ್ಕೆ ಇಳಿಯುವುದಿಲ್ಲ, ಭರವಸೆಯ ಮಾತನ್ನೂ ಆಡುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಸಿಂಹನಾದ ಮಾಡಿ ಶಂಖ ಊದುತ್ತಾರೆ. ‘ತಸ್ಯ ಹರ್ಷಂ ಸಂಜನಯನ್’, ಅಂದರೆ ಅವನಿಗೆ ಹರ್ಷ ಉಂಟುಮಾಡಲು ಎಂದು ಸಂಜಯನೇ ಉದ್ದೇಶವನ್ನು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾನೆ. ದುರ್ಯೋಧನನ ಮಾತಿನ ಹಿಂದಿನ ಆತಂಕವನ್ನು ಹಿರಿಯರು ಗುರುತಿಸಿದರು ಎಂದು ಹಲವರು ಓದುತ್ತಾರೆ.
Duryodhana spoke to Drona. The one who answers is Bhishma. He does not argue, nor does he offer words of reassurance. He roars like a lion and blows his conch. Sanjaya himself states the purpose: tasya harsham samjanayan, to raise his spirits. Many read this as the elder recognising the anxiety behind Duryodhana’s words.
ಸಂಜಯ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಭೀಷ್ಮರನ್ನು ಕುರುವೃದ್ಧ, ಪಿತಾಮಹ ಎಂದು ಕರೆಯುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಅವರು ಎರಡೂ ಕಡೆಯವರಿಗೆ ಅಜ್ಜ. ಯುದ್ಧ ಬೇಡವೆಂದು ಅವರು ದುರ್ಯೋಧನನಿಗೆ ಹಿಂದೆ ಹಲವು ಬಾರಿ ಹೇಳಿದ್ದರು ಎಂದು ಮಹಾಭಾರತದ ಉದ್ಯೋಗ ಪರ್ವ ದಾಖಲಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಆದರೂ ಇಂದು ಅವರು ಅವನ ಸೈನ್ಯದ ಮುಂದೆ ನಿಂತಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಅದಲ್ಲದೆ ಯುದ್ಧದ ಮೊದಲ ನಾದ ಬಂದದ್ದು ಕೌರವರ ಕಡೆಯಿಂದ ಎಂಬುದನ್ನೂ ಕೆಲವು ವ್ಯಾಖ್ಯಾನಕಾರರು ಗಮನಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ.
Sanjaya calls Bhishma kuruvriddha, eldest of the Kurus, and pitamaha, the grandfather. He is grandfather to both sides. The Udyoga Parva of the Mahabharata records that he had told Duryodhana many times that the war should not happen. Yet today he stands at the head of his army. Besides, some commentators note that the first sound of war came from the Kaurava side.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today
ಹಿರಿಯರು ಕೆಲವೊಮ್ಮೆ ತಾವು ಒಪ್ಪದ ನಿರ್ಧಾರಕ್ಕೂ ಬೆನ್ನು ಕೊಡುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಮನೆಯ ಗೌರವಕ್ಕಾಗಿಯೋ, ಕೊಟ್ಟ ಮಾತಿಗಾಗಿಯೋ, ಅಥವಾ ಕುಸಿಯುತ್ತಿರುವ ಕಿರಿಯನನ್ನು ಒಂಟಿಯಾಗಿ ಬಿಡಲಾಗದೆಯೋ.
Elders sometimes lend their backing to a decision they do not agree with. For the honour of the family, for a word once given, or because they cannot leave a faltering younger one alone.
ಭೀಷ್ಮರ ಸಿಂಹನಾದ ಗಟ್ಟಿಯಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಆದರೆ ಅದರೊಳಗೆ ಅವರದೇ ಆದ ಒಂದು ಮೌನವೂ ಇತ್ತು ಎನ್ನಬಹುದು. ಜೋರಾಗಿ ಕೇಳಿಸುವ ಧೈರ್ಯದ ಹಿಂದೆ ಹೇಳದೆ ಉಳಿದ ಅಸಮ್ಮತಿ ಇರುವುದು ಅಪರೂಪವೇನಲ್ಲ.
Bhishma’s lion roar was loud. But one could say it held a silence of his own. It is not rare for loud courage to carry a disagreement that was never spoken.
