Context and commentary on verse 1.17
Verses seventeen and eighteen together make one sentence. The verb dadhmuh, they blew, comes at the end of the next verse. The names Dhrishtadyumna, Virata and Satyaki had already appeared in Duryodhana’s list. Now Sanjaya sets the same names beside their conches. The warrior called Yuyudhana there is called Satyaki here.
Shikhandi is a new name here. The Mahabharata says that Shikhandi, born a daughter in Drupada’s house, had been Amba in a previous birth: the princess Bhishma carried off from a svayamvara, whose life was ruined as a result. Besides, Amba was the daughter of a king of Kashi. On the tenth day Arjuna brings Bhishma down with Shikhandi placed in front of him. Seeing Kashya and Shikhandi side by side in this line, it is hard not to remember that old story.
Sources: several. Where commentators differ, both readings are given here.
For life today
An injustice one person has forgotten stays alive in another’s memory. Amba’s story may have been an old episode for Bhishma. But it has mounted a chariot in the form of Shikhandi and come to stand in front of him.
It is like this in families too. A word spoken long ago, a decision once taken, is a closed story for us. For the one who carries its wound, it is not closed yet.
