Context and commentary on verse 1.28
Sridhara Swami marks Arjuna’s speech as running from here to the end of the chapter. Notice the construction kripaya paraya avishtah. Arjuna has not taken hold of compassion; compassion has taken hold of him. Sridhara explains vishidan as sinking deeply, being overcome by dejection. The word vishada in the chapter’s name comes from the same root.
The line arjuna uvacha comes in the middle of this verse too. The Arjuna who earlier called those opposite men come to please Duryodhana now calls them svajana, my own people. The commentaries debate whether this compassion is true kindness or a feeling mixed with delusion. Besides, at the start of the second chapter Krishna calls it kashmala, a stain on the mind.

For life today
Understanding another’s pain and stepping forward to do something for them is one thing. Drowning in that pain and collapsing ourselves is another. From outside, both look like compassion.
Psychology recognises the two as different. Doctors, nurses and those who care for a sick person at home learn this early. The first gives strength to the hands. The second lets the bow slip from them. The next two verses show exactly that.
