This mixing leads both the destroyers of the family and the family itself to hell. Their ancestors fall too, deprived of the offerings of rice and water.
Context and commentary on verse 1.42
Pinda is the ball of rice offered to the ancestors in shraddha. Udaka is the water of tarpana. Tradition holds that the ancestors are satisfied by these offerings made by their descendants. Arjuna’s fear is that if the family itself is gone, or the rites stop, that chain is broken.
Notice how Arjuna’s sorrow stretches in both directions. Behind the eighteenth verse stood the children of the next generation. Here stand the ancestors of the generations before. Besides, for him this is a war that wounds not only the living, but the dead and the unborn.

For life today
Whatever our belief about what follows death, there is a simple human truth inside the rites for ancestors. Once a year a family sits together and says aloud the names of those who are gone.
Saying a name keeps a memory alive. Memory holds a family together. It is no wonder that the breaking of that chain of memory looked to Arjuna as terrible as hell.
