Context and commentary on verse 1.44
Anushushruma, we have heard. As authority for his words Arjuna offers what he has learned by hearing from tradition and from elders. He does not say I know; he says we have heard. With this, the list of consequences begun in the fortieth verse comes to an end.
There are two readings of this verse. In the reading given here, narake ‘niyatam, the sense is for an indefinite time, a period no one can measure. Some editions read narake niyatam, and then the sense is certainly. Besides, many translations follow the second reading. So both meanings are given here.
Sources: several. Where commentators differ, both readings are given here.
For life today
Many of the things we fear are things we have heard, not seen. Arjuna’s we have heard was the word of elders and scripture. Today our we have heard is often a message forwarded on the phone.
In anxious moments, things we hear quickly become beliefs, because they fit the fear already there. That is why it is good to ask once: where did I hear this, and who said it? Especially where health is concerned.
