Context and commentary on verse 1.45

Aho bata is a cry of deep lament. In the thirty-eighth verse the greed belonged to those opposite: lobhopahatachetasah. Here the same greed turns towards his own side: rajyasukhalobhena, we. Arjuna points the finger of accusation at himself.

But is this self-accusation fair? The Udyoga Parva tells that to avoid war Yudhishthira finally asked for only five villages, and Duryodhana refused to give even as much land as the point of a needle. Besides, the word vyavasitah, we have resolved, carries the tone of speaking as though the crime were already done, though nothing has yet been done.

For life today

When sorrow is intense, it leaves outside targets and turns on us: it is all my fault, I am the selfish one. There is a difference between true remorse and this kind of excessive self-blame.

Remorse weighs what happened fairly. Excessive self-blame puts all the weights on one pan of the scale. It is often seen in those who have lost someone close, and in those who have cared for a patient for a long time. What they need is not a verdict, but someone who will listen patiently.
