Context and commentary on verse 1.47
In the last verse of the chapter Sanjaya takes up the narration again. Commentators note that this verse shows in action the resolve behind the words I do not wish to kill them and it would be better if they killed me. The bow raised in the twentieth verse is now down. The warrior who stood is sitting.
The chapter is called Arjuna Vishada Yoga, the yoga of Arjuna’s despair. It is natural to ask how sorrow can be yoga. Many commentators answer that without this collapse of Arjuna’s there would be no Gita. The moment a question is born is the door to understanding. Besides, the second chapter opens with a description of Arjuna, his eyes full of tears. From there, Krishna begins to speak.

For life today
Many real conversations begin only when someone admits I cannot do this, and sits down. Until then a performance of everything is fine goes on. It is the same in a doctor’s room and in the kitchen at home.
The chariot has halted. The bow is down. Both armies are waiting. Krishna has not yet spoken.
