Context and commentary on verse 1.46
These are Arjuna’s last words in this chapter. The man who said I do not want victory in the thirty-second verse, and let them kill me in the thirty-fifth, has now come to say it would be better if they killed me. Kshemataram is a comparative. It does not say this is good; it says this is better.
Some modern readers hear a note of non-violence in this verse. But in the setting of the Gita, Krishna does not accept it that way. In the third verse of the second chapter he calls it hridaurbalya, weakness of heart. Besides, commentators explain that though those words sound harsh, their purpose is to raise Arjuna to his feet.

For life today
It would be better if I were not here. If someone close to us says something like this, it should not be brushed aside as a passing low mood. Listen seriously, stay with them, and seek a doctor’s help if needed. If such feelings are inside you, speak to someone you trust or to a doctor.
Arjuna’s good fortune was that he was not alone in that moment. The one beside him did not interrupt, and was in no hurry to teach. He listened in silence to eighteen verses of pain. Only then did he speak.
