Masi Magam is the day of the sacred bath at the sea, the rivers and the temple tanks of the Tamil country, on the star Magha in the Tamil month of Masi, near the full moon.
How it is kept
On the day of the Magha star in Masi, near the full moon, temple deities are taken in procession to the sea, rivers and temple tanks for the sacred bath, and devotees bathe with them. The great gatherings are at Kumbakonam’s Mahamaham tank and on the shores of Puducherry and the Tamil coast. Every twelve years, when Jupiter is in Simha, the Kumbakonam bath is the Mahamaham.
The story
Kumbakonam’s story is that at the end of an age the pot of amrita floated there, and when Shiva broke it with an arrow the nectar filled the Mahamaham tank. A bath there on Masi Magam is held to equal a bath in all the holy rivers, which are said to come there to be cleansed of what people leave in them.
Which day Anudina gives
Anudina gives the day on which Magha is the star at sunrise in the Tamil solar month of Masi. When it holds at sunrise on two days of the month, the later day is taken.
It is a Tamil observance. Anudina shows it under the South Indian custom, and under the North Indian custom only when “Show festivals of other regions too” is turned on. A reader who ticks the Shaiva Siddhanta lineage in the Tradition sheet sees it too, wherever they are.
The rule was compared with 12 March 2025 and 3 March 2026 (Drik Panchang). For 2027 Drik Panchang gives 20 February where the sunrise rule gives 21 February; Anudina shows 21 February.
