ಆಚರಿಸುವ ರೀತಿ
ಮಧುರೈನ ಮೀನಾಕ್ಷಿ ಸುಂದರೇಶ್ವರರ್ ದೇವಾಲಯದ ಚಿತ್ತಿರೈ ಉತ್ಸವದಲ್ಲಿ, ಬೆಳಿಗ್ಗೆ ಸಾಂಪ್ರದಾಯಿಕ ವಿವಾಹದ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ವಿಧಿವಿಧಾನಗಳೊಂದಿಗೆ ಮೀನಾಕ್ಷಿ ಮತ್ತು ಸುಂದರೇಶ್ವರರ ಕಲ್ಯಾಣವನ್ನು ನೆರವೇರಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಸಾವಿರಾರು ಭಕ್ತರು ಇದನ್ನು ಕಣ್ತುಂಬಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾರೆ, ಹಾಗೂ ಅನೇಕ ಮುತ್ತೈದೆಯರು ಅಂದು ತಮ್ಮ ಮಾಂಗಲ್ಯದ ದಾರವನ್ನು ಬದಲಾಯಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾರೆ. ನಂತರ ರಥೋತ್ಸವ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತದೆ, ಆಮೇಲೆ ಕಲ್ಲಳಗರ್ ವೈಗೈ ನದಿಗೆ ಇಳಿಯುವ ವೈಭವ ಜರುಗುತ್ತದೆ.
ಕಥೆ
ಪಾಂಡ್ಯ ರಾಜ ಮಲಯಧ್ವಜನಿಗೆ ಯಾಗದ ಫಲವಾಗಿ ಮೀನಾಕ್ಷಿ ಜನಿಸಿದಳೆಂದೂ, ಮಧುರೈ ರಾಣಿಯಾಗಿ ಆಡಳಿತ ನಡೆಸಿ ದಿಗ್ವಿಜಯಕ್ಕೆ ಹೊರಟಳೆಂದೂ ತಿರುವಿಳೈಯಾಡಲ್ ಪುರಾಣ ಹೇಳುತ್ತದೆ. ಕೈಲಾಸದಲ್ಲಿ ಶಿವನನ್ನು ಕಂಡ ತಕ್ಷಣವೇ ಆತನೇ ತನ್ನ ಪತಿಯೆಂದು ಆಕೆಗೆ ಅರಿವಾಯಿತು. ಶಿವನು ಸುಂದರೇಶ್ವರನಾಗಿ ಮಧುರೈಗೆ ಬಂದು ಆಕೆಯನ್ನು ವರಿಸಿದನು; ಆಕೆಯ ಸಹೋದರನಾದ ವಿಷ್ಣು ಕನ್ಯಾದಾನ ಮಾಡಿದನು. ಇತ್ತ ಮದುವೆಗೆಂದು ಹೊರಟ ಕಲ್ಲಳಗರ್ ಬರುವುದು ತಡವಾಯಿತು ಎಂಬುದು ಜನಜನಿತ ಕಥೆ.
ಅನುದಿನ ಕೊಡುವ ದಿನ
ಪ್ರತಿ ವರ್ಷವೂ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನವೇ ಈ ದಿನವನ್ನು ನಿಗದಿಪಡಿಸುತ್ತದೆ; ಯಾವುದೇ ತಿಥಿ ಅಥವಾ ನಕ್ಷತ್ರದ ನಿಯಮ ಇದನ್ನು ನಿರ್ಧರಿಸುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಅನುದಿನ ಆ್ಯಪ್ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನದ ಅಧಿಕೃತ ದಿನಾಂಕಗಳನ್ನೇ ಇಟ್ಟುಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದು, ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರತ್ಯೇಕವಾಗಿ ಲೆಕ್ಕ ಹಾಕುವುದೇನೂ ಇರುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಇದರಲ್ಲಿ 2025ರ ಮೇ 8 ಮತ್ತು 2026ರ ಏಪ್ರಿಲ್ 28ರ ದಿನಾಂಕಗಳಿವೆ.
ಇದೊಂದು ತಮಿಳು ಆಚರಣೆ. ಅನುದಿನ ಇದನ್ನು ದಕ್ಷಿಣ ಭಾರತದ ಸಂಪ್ರದಾಯದಲ್ಲಿ ತೋರಿಸುತ್ತದೆ; ಉತ್ತರ ಭಾರತದ ಸಂಪ್ರದಾಯದಲ್ಲಿ ‘ಇತರ ಪ್ರದೇಶಗಳ ಹಬ್ಬಗಳನ್ನೂ ತೋರಿಸಿ’ ಆಯ್ಕೆಯನ್ನು ಆನ್ ಮಾಡಿದಾಗ ಮಾತ್ರ ತೋರಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಸಂಪ್ರದಾಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಶಾಕ್ತ ಅಥವಾ ಶೈವ ಸಿದ್ಧಾಂತ ಪರಂಪರೆಯನ್ನು ಆಯ್ದುಕೊಳ್ಳುವ ಓದುಗರಿಗೂ, ಅವರು ಎಲ್ಲೇ ಇದ್ದರೂ ಇದು ಕಾಣಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.

Thousands watch, and many married women change the thread of their own mangalasutra that day. The car festival follows, and then Kallazhagar’s entry into the Vaigai.
The story
The Tiruvilaiyadal Purana tells that Meenakshi was born to the Pandya king Malayadhvaja from a sacrifice, ruled Madurai as its queen and set out to conquer the world. At Kailasa, on seeing Shiva, she knew him as her lord. He came to Madurai as Sundareswarar and married her, with her brother Vishnu giving her away; the popular story says Kallazhagar, setting out for the wedding, arrived too late.
Which day Anudina gives
The temple fixes the day each year, and no tithi or star rule decides it, so Anudina holds the temple’s own dates and has nothing to work out. It has 8 May 2025 and 28 April 2026.
It is a Tamil observance. Anudina shows it under the South Indian custom, and under the North Indian custom only when “Show festivals of other regions too” is turned on. A reader who ticks the Shakta or Shaiva Siddhanta lineage in the Tradition sheet sees it too, wherever they are.
The dates are 8 May 2025 (DT Next) and 28 April 2026 (the temple’s schedule, and News Today of 11 March 2026). For any other year Anudina shows no day until the temple announces one and it is added.
