Context and commentary on verse 17.22

Shankara shows two faces of tamasic giving. One is an impure place, a time not known for merit, and unworthy recipients such as fools and thieves. The other is subtler still: even when place, time and recipient are all right, giving without kind words, without washing the feet and honouring, while insulting the receiver, is also tamasic.

Ramanuja takes ‘asatkrita’ as without honours such as washing the feet, and ‘avajnata’ as with contempt. Sridhara Swami gives a time of ritual impurity as an example of ‘the wrong time’. According to Ramanuja the distinctions of sacrifice, austerity and giving by the gunas end here, and next comes their mark through their connection with the words ‘Om Tat Sat’. Madhva’s comment on this verse is not in our source text.

For life today

Shankara’s second point still stings: even when the giving is right, if the manner is humiliating, it is tamasic. Photographing those who receive help and publicising it can be just that.

Treating those who receive free care in hospitals with the same respect as those who pay is how this verse is practised.
