ದೀನಾನಾಂ ಕಲ್ಪವೃಕ್ಷಃ: ಉಸಿರಾಡುವವರ ನಡುವೆ ಬದುಕುವವನು

ಹಳ್ಳಿಯೊಂದರ ಹಿರಿಯ ಮೇಷ್ಟ್ರು ತೀರಿಕೊಂಡಾಗ ಊರಿನ ಬೇರೆ ಬೇರೆ ಸ್ತರದ ಜನ ಮೌನವಾಗಿ ಬಂದು ನಿಂತರು ಎಂದು ಹೇಳುವುದನ್ನು ಕೇಳಿದ್ದೇವೆ. ಯಾರಿಗೆ ಏನು ಮಾಡಿದ್ದರು ಎಂದು ಅವರು ಎಲ್ಲಿಯೂ ಹೇಳಿಕೊಂಡಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ.

ಈ ಉದ್ದನೆಯ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಅಂಥ ಒಬ್ಬ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಯನ್ನು ಹಲವು ಉಪಮೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಚಿತ್ರಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಛಂದಸ್ಸಿನ ಹೆಸರು ಖಚಿತವಿಲ್ಲ, ಪ್ರತಿ ಸಾಲಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಸುಮಾರು ನಲವತ್ತೆರಡು ಅಕ್ಷರಗಳಿವೆ.

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ

ದೀನಾನಾಂ ಕಲ್ಪವೃಕ್ಷಃ (दीनानां कल्पवृक्षः, dīnānāṃ kalpavṛkṣaḥ) = ದೀನರಿಗೆ ಕಲ್ಪವೃಕ್ಷ (a wish granting tree for the needy)
ಸುಗುಣಫಲನತಃ (सुगुणफलनतः, suguṇaphalanataḥ) = ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಗುಣಗಳ ಹಣ್ಣಿನಿಂದ ಬಾಗಿದವನು (bowed low with the fruit of good qualities)
ಸಜ್ಜನಾನಾಂ ಕುಟುಂಬೀ (सज्जनानां कुटुम्बी, sajjanānāṃ kuṭumbī) = ಸಜ್ಜನರ ಬಂಧುವಿನಂತೆ (a kinsman to the good)

ಸ ಜೀವತ್ಯಧಿಕಗುಣತಯಾ (स जीवत्यधिकगुणतया, sa jīvatyadhikaguṇatayā) = ಅವನು ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಗುಣಗಳಿಂದ ಬದುಕುತ್ತಾನೆ (he lives by reason of his greater virtues)
ಚೋಚ್ಛ್ವಸಂತೀವ ಚಾನ್ಯೇ (चोच्छ्वसन्तीव चान्ये, cocchvasantīva cānye) = ಇತರರು ಉಸಿರಾಡುವಂತೆ ಮಾತ್ರ ಇದ್ದಾರೆ (and the others merely seem to breathe)

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)

ದೀನರಿಗೆ ಕಲ್ಪವೃಕ್ಷ, ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಗುಣಗಳ ಹಣ್ಣಿನಿಂದ ಬಾಗಿದವನು, ಸಜ್ಜನರ ಬಂಧುವಿನಂತಿರುವವನು, ಕಲಿತವರಿಗೆ ಆದರ್ಶ, ನಡತೆಯ ಕಸೋಟಿ, ಶೀಲವೆಂಬ ದಡವುಳ್ಳ ಸಮುದ್ರ. ಗೌರವಿಸುವವನು, ಅವಮಾನಿಸದವನು, ಮನುಷ್ಯ ಗುಣಗಳ ನಿಧಿ, ದಾಕ್ಷಿಣ್ಯ ಮತ್ತು ಔದಾರ್ಯದ ಸ್ವಭಾವದವನು. ಇಂಥ ಒಬ್ಬನೇ ಶ್ಲಾಘ್ಯ. ಅವನು ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಗುಣಗಳಿಂದ ಬದುಕುತ್ತಾನೆ, ಇತರರು ಉಸಿರಾಡುವಂತೆ ಮಾತ್ರ ಇದ್ದಾರೆ.

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)

A wish granting tree for the needy, bowed low with the fruit of good qualities, a kinsman to the good, a mirror and model for the trained, a touchstone of good conduct, an ocean with character for its shore. One who honours and does not slight, a store of human virtues, courteous and generous by nature. Such a one alone is worthy of praise. He truly lives by his greater virtues, and the others merely seem to breathe.

ಈ ಸುಭಾಷಿತದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this subhashita

ನಿಕಷ ಎಂದರೆ ಚಿನ್ನ ಪರೀಕ್ಷಿಸುವ ಕಸೋಟಿ ಕಲ್ಲು. ಇವನ ನಡತೆಯೇ ಇತರರ ನಡತೆಯನ್ನು ಅಳೆಯುವ ಮಾನದಂಡ ಎಂದು ಇಲ್ಲಿನ ಅರ್ಥ.

Nikasha is the touchstone on which gold is tested. The sense is that his conduct is the measure against which others’ conduct is judged.

ಕೊನೆಯ ಸಾಲಿನ ಚಮತ್ಕಾರ ಇದು: ಗುಣಗಳಿಂದ ಬದುಕುವವನು ಒಬ್ಬನೇ, ಉಳಿದವರು ಉಸಿರಾಡುವಂತೆ ಮಾತ್ರ ಇದ್ದಾರೆ. ಬದುಕುವುದು ಎಂದರೆ ಉಸಿರಾಡುವುದಕ್ಕಿಂತ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಎಂಬ ಮಾತು ಕಟುವಾಗಿ ಕೇಳುತ್ತದೆ. ಕುಟುಂಬೀ ಪದದ ಅರ್ಥ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಬಂಧು ಅಥವಾ ಆಪ್ತನೆಂದು ಸಹಜವಾಗಿ ತೋರುತ್ತದೆ.

The sting of the last line: only one lives by his virtues, the others seem to breathe. The claim that living is more than breathing is blunt. The word kutumbi seems naturally to mean a kinsman or close one here.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today

ಸಾವಿರ ಜನರ ನಡುವೆ ನಾವು ಗೊತ್ತಿಲ್ಲದೆ ಕಲಿಯುವುದು ಒಬ್ಬರ ನಡತೆಯನ್ನು ನೋಡಿ. ಕಲಿಸುವ ವೈದ್ಯರ ನಡತೆಯೇ ಶಿಷ್ಯರಿಗೆ ಪಠ್ಯಪುಸ್ತಕಕ್ಕಿಂತ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಉಳಿಯುತ್ತದೆ.

Among a thousand people, we often learn without noticing from one person’s conduct. A teaching doctor’s conduct stays with students longer than the textbook.

ಕೊನೆಯ ಸಾಲನ್ನು ಇತರರನ್ನು ಕೀಳಾಗಿ ಕಾಣಲು ಬಳಸಬಾರದು. ಅದು ಕೇಳುವವನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆ ಒಂದು ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆ: ನನ್ನ ದಿನ ಗುಣದಿಂದ ಕಳೆಯಿತೇ ಅಥವಾ ಬರಿ ಉಸಿರಿನಿಂದ.

The last line should not be used to look down on others. It is a question put to the listener: did my day pass in virtue or in mere breath.
