The cuckoo that has grown up among crows still has a sweet voice. How would harshness come to one of good nature, even in the company of the wicked?
About this subhashita
Poets knew well the saying that the cuckoo lays its egg in a crow’s nest. That very observation is used here as the comparison.
The closing question, kutah, means from where. It is a question that needs no answer, a way of saying harshness simply does not arise in him.

For life today
It is true that surroundings shape a person. Yet some keep their gentleness in a hard place, and they deserve to be noticed and admired.
It should not be read as saying bad company does no harm. The verse praises an exception, it does not state a rule for everyone.
