What is the use of a great birth or a father’s prowess. A man reaches standing through his own strength. Pots cannot dry up even a well, yet the sage born from a pot drank up the ocean itself.
About this subhashita
Kumbhodbhava means pot born. The Puranas call the sage Agastya by this name, and the story of Agastya drinking the ocean is well known.
The word kumbha appears twice, first as clay pots and then in the pot born sage. Of the same origin, one cannot dry a well while the other drinks the ocean, and that is the point.

A family name may open a door. What keeps one inside is only one’s own ability.
The verse does not look down on good birth. It says only that sitting on it achieves nothing.
