ಶಿರಸಿ ನಿಹಿತೋಽಪಿ ನಿತ್ಯಂ: ಎಣ್ಣೆ ಹಚ್ಚಿದರೂ ಸುರುಳಿ ಬಿಡದ ಕೂದಲು

ಸುರುಳಿ ಕೂದಲಿನ ಮಗುವಿಗೆ ತಾಯಿ ಎಣ್ಣೆ ಹಚ್ಚಿ ಬಾಚಿ ಜಡೆ ಹೆಣೆಯುತ್ತಾಳೆ. ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಹೊತ್ತಿಗೆ ಮತ್ತೆ ಅದೇ ಸುರುಳಿ ಹೊರಗೆ ಇಣುಕುತ್ತದೆ.

ಈ ಆರ್ಯಾ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಅಂಥ ಕೂದಲಿನ ಹೋಲಿಕೆಯಿಂದ ನೀಚನ ವಕ್ರ ಸ್ವಭಾವವನ್ನು ಹೇಳುತ್ತದೆ.

ಶಿರಸಿ ನಿಹಿತೋಽಪಿ ನಿತ್ಯಂ ಯತ್ನಾದಪಿ ಸೇವಿತೋ ಬಹುಸ್ನೇಹೈಃ
ತರುಣೀಕಚ ಇವ ನೀಚಃ ಕೌಟಿಲ್ಯಂ ನೈವ ವಿಜಹಾತಿ

शिरसि निहितोऽपि नित्यं यत्नादपि सेवितो बहुस्नेहैः
तरुणीकच इव नीचः कौटिल्यं नैव विजहाति

ಸುಭಾಷಿತ (IAST)

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ

ಶಿರಸಿ (शिरसि, śirasi) = ತಲೆಯ ಮೇಲೆ (on the head)
ನಿಹಿತಃ ಅಪಿ (निहितः अपि, nihitaḥ api) = ಇಟ್ಟುಕೊಂಡರೂ (though placed)
ನಿತ್ಯಮ್ (नित्यम्, nityam) = ಯಾವಾಗಲೂ (always)
ಯತ್ನಾತ್ ಅಪಿ (यत्नात् अपि, yatnāt api) = ಪ್ರಯತ್ನದಿಂದಲೂ (even with effort)
ಸೇವಿತಃ (सेवितः, sevitaḥ) = ಉಪಚರಿಸಿದರೂ (though tended)
ಬಹುಸ್ನೇಹೈಃ (बहुस्नेहैः, bahusnehaiḥ) = ಬಹಳ ಎಣ್ಣೆ ಮತ್ತು ಪ್ರೀತಿಯಿಂದ (with much oil and affection)
ತರುಣೀಕಚಃ (तरुणीकचः, taruṇīkacaḥ) = ಯುವತಿಯ ಕೂದಲು (the hair of a young woman)
ಇವ (इव, iva) = ಹಾಗೆ (like)
ನೀಚಃ (नीचः, nīcaḥ) = ನೀಚ (the base man)
ಕೌಟಿಲ್ಯಮ್ (कौटिल्यम्, kauṭilyam) = ವಕ್ರತೆಯನ್ನು (crookedness)
ನ ಏವ (न एव, na eva) = ಎಂದಿಗೂ ಇಲ್ಲ (never)
ವಿಜಹಾತಿ (विजहाति, vijahāti) = ಬಿಡುತ್ತಾನೆ (gives up)

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)

ಯಾವಾಗಲೂ ತಲೆಯ ಮೇಲೆ ಇಟ್ಟುಕೊಂಡರೂ, ಬಹಳ ಎಣ್ಣೆಯಿಂದ, ಬಹಳ ಪ್ರೀತಿಯಿಂದ ಜತನ ಮಾಡಿದರೂ, ಯುವತಿಯ ಕೂದಲಿನಂತೆ ನೀಚ ತನ್ನ ವಕ್ರತೆಯನ್ನು ಬಿಡುವುದೇ ಇಲ್ಲ.

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)

Though always kept on the head, though tended with effort and with much oil and affection, the base man, like a young woman’s hair, never gives up his crookedness.

ಈ ಸುಭಾಷಿತದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this subhashita

ಸ್ನೇಹ ಎಂಬ ಪದಕ್ಕೆ ಎಣ್ಣೆ ಮತ್ತು ಪ್ರೀತಿ ಎರಡೂ ಅರ್ಥಗಳಿವೆ. ಕೂದಲಿಗೆ ಎಣ್ಣೆ, ನೀಚನಿಗೆ ಪ್ರೀತಿ ಎಂಬ ಶ್ಲೇಷೆ ಇಲ್ಲಿದೆ. ತಲೆಯ ಮೇಲೆ ಇಡುವುದು ಗೌರವದ ಸೂಚನೆಯೂ ಹೌದು.

Sneha means both oil and affection. The pun is oil for the hair and affection for the base man. Keeping a thing on the head is also a sign of honour.

ಕೌಟಿಲ್ಯ ಎಂದರೆ ವಕ್ರತೆ. ಕೂದಲಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಅದು ಸುರುಳಿ, ಮನುಷ್ಯನಲ್ಲಿ ಕುಟಿಲ ಬುದ್ಧಿ. ಒಂದೇ ಪದ ಎರಡೂ ಕಡೆ ಹೊಂದುವುದು ಈ ಹೋಲಿಕೆಯ ಚಾತುರ್ಯ.

Kautilya means crookedness. In hair it is the curl, in a man a crooked mind. One word fitting both is the cleverness of this comparison.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today

ಕೆಲವರಿಗೆ ಎಷ್ಟು ಗೌರವ ಕೊಟ್ಟರೂ ನಡತೆ ಬದಲಾಗದು. ಅಂಥ ಸಂದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ ನಮ್ಮ ಪ್ರೀತಿಯೇ ವ್ಯರ್ಥವಾಯಿತು ಎಂದು ಕೊರಗದೆ ಅವರ ಸ್ವಭಾವವನ್ನು ಅರಿತು ವ್ಯವಹರಿಸುವುದು ಒಳ್ಳೆಯದು.

With some people no amount of honour changes their conduct. It is better then not to mourn wasted affection but to deal with them knowing their nature.

ಆದರೆ ಕೂದಲಿನ ಸುರುಳಿ ದೋಷವೇನಲ್ಲ, ಅದು ಹುಟ್ಟಿನ ಸ್ವಭಾವ. ಹೋಲಿಕೆಯನ್ನು ಅತಿಯಾಗಿ ಹಿಡಿದು ಜನ ಬದಲಾಗಬಹುದು ಎಂಬ ಸಾಧ್ಯತೆಯನ್ನೇ ಮುಚ್ಚಬಾರದು.

But the curl in hair is no fault, it is a given trait. We should not hold the image so hard that we shut out the chance that people can change.
