ವಹಂತಿ ಶೋಕಶಂಕುಂ ಚ: ದುಃಖವನ್ನು ಹೊತ್ತೂ ಕೆಲಸ ನಡೆಸುವ ಹಿರಿಯರು

ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು ದುಃಖ ನಡೆದ ಮರುದಿನವೂ ಶಿಕ್ಷಕರೊಬ್ಬರು ಎಂದಿನಂತೆ ತರಗತಿಗೆ ಬರುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಅವರ ಮುಖ ನೋಡಿ ಒಳಗಿನ ನೋವು ಯಾರಿಗೂ ಗೊತ್ತಾಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ.

ಅಂಥವರ ಸ್ವಭಾವವನ್ನು ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಗುರುತಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಇದೊಂದು ಅನುಷ್ಟುಪ್ ಛಂದಸ್ಸಿನ ಪದ್ಯ. ಇದರ ತಿರುವು ಕೊನೆಯ ಪದಗಳಲ್ಲಿದೆ: ಇದು ಹಿರಿಯರ ಆಳದಿಂದ ಬರುವ ಒಂದು ವಿಶೇಷ ಗುಣ.

वहन्ति शोकशङ्कुं च कुर्वन्ति च यथोचितम्
कोऽप्येष महतां हन्त गम्भीर्यानुगुणो गुणः

ಸುಭಾಷಿತ (IAST)

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ

ವಹಂತಿ (वहन्ति, vahanti) = ಹೊತ್ತಿರುತ್ತಾರೆ (they carry)
ಶೋಕಶಂಕುಂ (शोकशङ्कुं, śokaśaṅkuṃ) = ದುಃಖವೆಂಬ ಮೊಳೆಯನ್ನು (the stake of sorrow)
ಚ (च, ca) = ಮತ್ತು (and)
ಕುರ್ವಂತಿ (कुर्वन्ति, kurvanti) = ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾರೆ (they do)
ಚ (च, ca) = ಮತ್ತು (and)
ಯಥೋಚಿತಮ್ (यथोचितम्, yathocitam) = ಯೋಗ್ಯವಾದಂತೆ (as is fitting)

ಗಂಭೀರ್ಯಾನುಗುಣೋ (गम्भीर्यानुगुणो, gambhīryānuguṇo) = ಗಾಂಭೀರ್ಯಕ್ಕೆ ತಕ್ಕ (fitting their depth)
ಗುಣಃ (गुणः, guṇaḥ) = ಗುಣ (quality)

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)

ಹಿರಿಯರು ದುಃಖವೆಂಬ ಮೊಳೆಯನ್ನು ಒಳಗೆ ಹೊತ್ತಿರುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಆದರೂ ಯೋಗ್ಯವಾದುದನ್ನು ಮಾಡುತ್ತಲೇ ಇರುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಹಿರಿಯರ ಈ ಗುಣ ಎಷ್ಟು ಅಪೂರ್ವ, ಇದು ಅವರ ಗಾಂಭೀರ್ಯಕ್ಕೆ ತಕ್ಕುದಾಗಿದೆ.

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)

The great carry the stake of sorrow within them, and still do what is fitting. How remarkable is this quality of the great, so well suited to their depth.

ಈ ಸುಭಾಷಿತದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this subhashita

ಶಂಕು ಎಂದರೆ ಮೊಳೆ ಅಥವಾ ಕೋಲು. ದುಃಖವನ್ನು ಒಳಗೆ ನಾಟಿದ ಮೊಳೆಗೆ ಹೋಲಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಅದು ಇದೆ, ಆದರೆ ಹೊರಗಿನ ಕೆಲಸಕ್ಕೆ ಅಡ್ಡಿಯಾಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ ಎಂಬುದೇ ಇಲ್ಲಿನ ಚಿತ್ರ.

Shanku means a stake or a peg. Sorrow is likened to a peg driven in deep. It is there, but it does not get in the way of outward duty. That is the picture.

ಗಾಂಭೀರ್ಯ ಎಂದರೆ ಆಳ. ಆಳವಾದ ನೀರು ಮೇಲೆ ಕದಲದಿರುವಂತೆ ಹಿರಿಯರ ಮನಸ್ಸು ಎಂದು ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಸೂಚಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ದುಃಖವಿಲ್ಲ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ, ದುಃಖವಿದ್ದೂ ಉಚಿತವನ್ನು ಬಿಡುವುದಿಲ್ಲ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಿದೆ.

Gambhirya means depth. As deep water stays still on the surface, so the verse suggests of the minds of the great. It does not say there is no grief. It says that with grief present they do not drop what is fitting.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today

ವೈದ್ಯರು ಮತ್ತು ಶಿಕ್ಷಕರು ತಮ್ಮ ಸ್ವಂತ ನೋವಿನ ದಿನಗಳಲ್ಲೂ ಇನ್ನೊಬ್ಬರ ಕೆಲಸಕ್ಕೆ ಹಾಜರಾಗಬೇಕಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಹಾಗೆ ಮಾಡುವವರನ್ನು ಗೌರವದಿಂದ ನೋಡಬಹುದು.

Doctors and teachers must often show up for another person’s need on days of their own pain. Those who manage it deserve respect.

ಇದರಿಂದ ನೋವನ್ನು ಅದುಮಿಡಬೇಕು ಎಂದು ತಿಳಿಯಬಾರದು. ಮನಸ್ಸು ಬಿಚ್ಚಿ ಹೇಳಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲು ಒಬ್ಬರು ಬೇಕು, ಅದು ಸಹ ಗಾಂಭೀರ್ಯದ ಭಾಗ.

This should not be read as a call to bottle pain up. One needs someone to talk to, and that too is part of depth.
