Context and commentary on verse 1.11
Duryodhana’s speech, begun beside Drona, ends here. Sridhara Swami explains ayana as the routes by which one breaks into a battle formation. Each warrior must hold his ground. While Bhishma fights those in front of him, no one should be able to strike him from behind. The sense, Sridhara adds, is that our very lives rest on Bhishma’s strength.
It may look strange that a whole army should guard its own commander. Some commentators connect this to Shikhandi. Bhishma had said beforehand that he would not shoot at Shikhandi, who was born a woman. Duryodhana knew of that one crack. Besides, notice something else. For all this long speech, Drona says not a word. The reply comes in the next verse, from Bhishma, and not in words.

For life today
Everyone guarding the one who is meant to guard everyone. This happens when the security of a household or an institution rests on a single person. The fear that everything will collapse if something happens to that one person quietly rules everyone.
There is another lesson in Drona’s silence. A long speech born of anxiety sometimes gets no answer at all. That silence may be consent, or weariness, or something that cannot be said. Think about it: how often have we taken the silence that met our words as agreement?
