Context and commentary on verse 1.23
The sentence running through the previous two verses is completed here. Sridhara Swami joins it together: halt the chariot between the two armies until I have seen these men. Arjuna does not call Duryodhana by name. He says dhartarashtra, the son of Dhritarashtra, and durbuddhi, the evil-minded. There is still anger in his words, and clarity.
He describes those opposite as men who came to please Duryodhana. Besides, the Mahabharata itself says that not everyone in that army came for the same reason. Shalya, the Pandavas’ maternal uncle, had set out to join them. The Udyoga Parva records that he gave his word to the Kauravas after being won over on the way by Duryodhana’s hospitality.

For life today
It is easy to hold everyone on the other side in a single phrase: his people. But that group holds those bound by debt, those trapped by a promise, those who saw no other way.
We see this in family quarrels and in the camps that form at work. Not everyone in the opposite row is an opponent. Within two verses, Arjuna will see this truth in a very painful form.
