ಸಂಜಯ ಉವಾಚ
ಏವಮುಕ್ತೋ ಹೃಷೀಕೇಶೋ ಗುಡಾಕೇಶೇನ ಭಾರತ ।
ಸೇನಯೋರುಭಯೋರ್ಮಧ್ಯೇ ಸ್ಥಾಪಯಿತ್ವಾ ರಥೋತ್ತಮಮ್ ॥ 24 ॥

सञ्जय उवाच
एवमुक्तो हृषीकेशो गुडाकेशेन भारत ।
सेनयोरुभयोर्मध्ये स्थापयित्वा रथोत्तमम् ॥ 24 ॥

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ
- ಸಂಜಯ ಉವಾಚ (सञ्जय उवाच, sañjaya uvāca) = ಸಂಜಯ ಹೇಳಿದನು (Sanjaya said)
- ಏವಮ್ (एवम्, evam) = ಹೀಗೆ (thus)
- ಉಕ್ತಃ (उक्तः, uktaḥ) = ಹೇಳಲ್ಪಟ್ಟ (addressed)
- ಹೃಷೀಕೇಶಃ (हृषीकेशः, hṛṣīkeśaḥ) = ಹೃಷೀಕೇಶ (Hrishikesha)
- ಗುಡಾಕೇಶೇನ (गुडाकेशेन, guḍākeśena) = ಗುಡಾಕೇಶನಿಂದ, ಅಂದರೆ ನಿದ್ರೆಯನ್ನು ಗೆದ್ದ ಅರ್ಜುನನಿಂದ (by Gudakesha, Arjuna, the conqueror of sleep)
- ಭಾರತ (भारत, bhārata) = ಓ ಭರತವಂಶಜನೇ, ಅಂದರೆ ಧೃತರಾಷ್ಟ್ರನೇ (O descendant of Bharata, Dhritarashtra)
- ಸೇನಯೋಃ ಉಭಯೋಃ (सेनयोः उभयोः, senayoḥ ubhayoḥ) = ಎರಡೂ ಸೈನ್ಯಗಳ (of both armies)
- ಮಧ್ಯೇ (मध्ये, madhye) = ನಡುವೆ (between)
- ಸ್ಥಾಪಯಿತ್ವಾ (स्थापयित्वा, sthāpayitvā) = ನಿಲ್ಲಿಸಿ (having halted)
- ರಥೋತ್ತಮಮ್ (रथोत्तमम्, rathottamam) = ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠವಾದ ರಥವನ್ನು (the finest of chariots)
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ಸಂಜಯ ಹೇಳಿದನು: ಓ ಭರತವಂಶಜನೇ, ಗುಡಾಕೇಶನಾದ ಅರ್ಜುನ ಹೀಗೆ ಹೇಳಿದಾಗ, ಹೃಷೀಕೇಶನು ಆ ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠ ರಥವನ್ನು ಎರಡೂ ಸೈನ್ಯಗಳ ನಡುವೆ ನಿಲ್ಲಿಸಿ,

Sanjaya said: O descendant of Bharata, addressed thus by Gudakesha, Hrishikesha halted that finest of chariots between the two armies,

ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಸಂಜಯ ಮತ್ತೆ ಮಾತು ಎತ್ತಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಗುಡಾಕಾ ಎಂದರೆ ನಿದ್ರೆ, ಅದರ ಈಶ ಗುಡಾಕೇಶ, ಅಂದರೆ ನಿದ್ರೆಯನ್ನು ಗೆದ್ದವನು ಎಂದು ಶ್ರೀಧರ ಸ್ವಾಮಿಗಳು ಬಿಡಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಗುಡ ಮತ್ತು ಕೇಶ ಎಂದು ಬಿಡಿಸಿ, ದಟ್ಟವಾದ ಗುಂಗುರು ಕೂದಲಿನವನು ಎಂಬ ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ಅರ್ಥವನ್ನೂ ಕೆಲವರು ಕೊಡುತ್ತಾರೆ.
Here Sanjaya takes up the narration again. Gudaka means sleep, and its lord is Gudakesha, the one who has conquered sleep, as Sridhara Swami explains. Some split it instead as guda and kesha and give another meaning: the one with thick curly hair.
ಒಂದೇ ಸಾಲಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಹೃಷೀಕೇಶ ಮತ್ತು ಗುಡಾಕೇಶ ಎಂಬ ಎರಡು ಹೆಸರುಗಳು ಬರುತ್ತವೆ. ಒಬ್ಬ ಇಂದ್ರಿಯಗಳ ಒಡೆಯ, ಇನ್ನೊಬ್ಬ ನಿದ್ರೆಯ ಒಡೆಯ. ಈ ನಾದದ ಹೊಂದಾಣಿಕೆ ವ್ಯಾಸರ ಉದ್ದೇಶಪೂರ್ವಕ ರಚನೆ ಎಂದು ಹಲವರು ಮೆಚ್ಚುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಅದಲ್ಲದೆ ಕೃಷ್ಣ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಯಾವ ಸಲಹೆಯನ್ನೂ ಕೊಡುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಹೇಳಿದಂತೆ ರಥವನ್ನು ನಿಲ್ಲಿಸುತ್ತಾನೆ, ಅಷ್ಟೇ.
Two names come in a single line: Hrishikesha and Gudakesha, lord of the senses and lord of sleep. Many admire the echo as a deliberate touch of Vyasa’s craft. Besides, Krishna gives no advice here. He halts the chariot as he was asked, nothing more.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today
ಅರ್ಜುನ ‘ರಥ ನಿಲ್ಲಿಸು’ ಎಂದಾಗ ಕೃಷ್ಣ ‘ಯಾಕೆ?’ ಎಂದು ಕೇಳಲಿಲ್ಲ. ‘ನೋಡಿದರೆ ನಿನಗೆ ಕಷ್ಟವಾದೀತು’ ಎಂದು ಎಚ್ಚರಿಸಲೂ ಇಲ್ಲ.
When Arjuna said halt the chariot, Krishna did not ask why. Nor did he warn that looking might be hard.
ಕೆಲವು ಪಾಠಗಳನ್ನು ಹೇಳಿ ಕಲಿಸಲಾಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಕಲಿಯುವವರು ತಾವೇ ಹೋಗಿ ನೋಡಬೇಕು. ಆಗ ಗುರು ಮಾಡಬೇಕಾದದ್ದು ಒಂದೇ: ಅವರು ನೋಡಲು ಬೇಕಾದ ಜಾಗದಲ್ಲಿ ರಥವನ್ನು ನಿಲ್ಲಿಸುವುದು, ಮತ್ತು ಅವರು ಕುಸಿದಾಗ ಪಕ್ಕದಲ್ಲಿರುವುದು. ಮಕ್ಕಳನ್ನು ಬೆಳೆಸುವ ಹೆತ್ತವರಿಗೂ ಇದು ಪರಿಚಿತ ಸಂಗತಿ.
Some lessons cannot be taught by telling. The learner has to go and see. Then the teacher has only one task: to halt the chariot where the learner needs to look, and to be close by when the learner falls. Parents raising children know this too.
