Context and commentary on verse 1.25
This is the only sentence Krishna speaks in the whole first chapter: Partha, pashyaitan samavetan kurun. Where he halts the chariot matters too: directly in front of Bhishma and Drona, the grandfather and the teacher Arjuna loves most. Many commentators read Krishna’s purpose in this very choice of place.
Two words can be opened up. Partha means the son of Pritha, that is, of Kunti. Kunti is the sister of Krishna’s father Vasudeva, so the address itself carries a reminder of kinship. Besides, Krishna does not call those opposite the sons of Dhritarashtra. He calls them Kurus. The Pandavas are Kurus too. That one word shows both sides as a single family.
Sources: several. Where commentators differ, both readings are given here.
For life today
Duryodhana counted ours and theirs. Arjuna said the men of the evil-minded one. Krishna used one word: Kurus. When the name changes, the seeing changes.
In a property dispute, calling the person opposite the other party is different from calling him elder brother. The second word makes the fight harder. But it brings the truth closer.
