Context and commentary on verse 1.3
Sridhara Swami marks Duryodhana’s speech as running from here to the eleventh verse. The commander of the Pandava army is Dhrishtadyumna. The Mahabharata says he was born from the fire of a sacrifice Drupada performed for a son who could kill Drona. Knowing this, Drona still taught him the use of weapons.
Duryodhana does not say the name directly. He says the son of Drupada. Madhusudana Saraswati explains that the aim is to stir the teacher’s anger by recalling the old enmity between Drona and Drupada. Besides, your disciple carries a barb: you yourself taught the man born to kill you. The words pandu-putranam acharya can also be read as teacher of the Pandavas, and then it becomes a second barb: your heart is on their side.

For life today
Some words sound like praise on the outside and carry a complaint inside. Your gifted disciple is one such phrase.
We know this from homes and workplaces alike: the habit of recalling someone’s past generosity as though it were their mistake today. We all know it. Still, under pressure, such words come quickly from our own mouths too.
