ಶ್ಲೋಕ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ಕುಲಕ್ಷಯೇ ಪ್ರಣಶ್ಯಂತಿ ಕುಲಧರ್ಮಾಃ ಸನಾತನಾಃ ।
ಧರ್ಮೇ ನಷ್ಟೇ ಕುಲಂ ಕೃತ್ಸ್ನಮಧರ್ಮೋಽಭಿಭವತ್ಯುತ ॥ 40 ॥
ಶ್ಲೋಕ (ದೇವನಾಗರಿ)
कुलक्षये प्रणश्यन्ति कुलधर्माः सनातनाः ।
धर्मे नष्टे कुलं कृत्स्नमधर्मोऽभिभवत्युत ॥ 40 ॥
ಶ್ಲೋಕ (IAST)
kulakṣaye praṇaśyanti kuladharmāḥ sanātanāḥ |
dharme naṣṭe kulaṃ kṛtsnamadharmo’bhibhavatyuta || 40 ||
ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ
- ಕುಲಕ್ಷಯೇ (कुलक्षये, kulakṣaye) = ಕುಲ ನಾಶವಾದಾಗ (when a family is destroyed)
- ಪ್ರಣಶ್ಯಂತಿ (प्रणश्यन्ति, praṇaśyanti) = ನಾಶವಾಗುತ್ತವೆ (perish)
- ಕುಲಧರ್ಮಾಃ (कुलधर्माः, kuladharmāḥ) = ಕುಲದ ಧರ್ಮಗಳು, ಆಚರಣೆಗಳು (the family’s dharmas, its rites and duties)
- ಸನಾತನಾಃ (सनातनाः, sanātanāḥ) = ಪರಂಪರೆಯಿಂದ ಬಂದ (age-old)
- ಧರ್ಮೇ (धर्मे, dharme) = ಧರ್ಮ (dharma)
- ನಷ್ಟೇ (नष्टे, naṣṭe) = ನಾಶವಾದಾಗ (when destroyed)
- ಕುಲಮ್ (कुलम्, kulam) = ಕುಲವನ್ನು (the family)

- ಅಭಿಭವತಿ (अभिभवति, abhibhavati) = ಆವರಿಸುತ್ತದೆ (overwhelms)
- ಉತ (उत, uta) = ಖಂಡಿತವಾಗಿ (indeed)
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ಕುಲ ನಾಶವಾದಾಗ ಪರಂಪರೆಯಿಂದ ಬಂದ ಕುಲಧರ್ಮಗಳು ನಾಶವಾಗುತ್ತವೆ. ಧರ್ಮ ನಾಶವಾದಾಗ ಇಡೀ ಕುಲವನ್ನು ಅಧರ್ಮ ಆವರಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)
When a family is destroyed, its age-old dharmas perish. When dharma perishes, adharma overwhelms the whole family.

ಇಲ್ಲಿಂದ ಅರ್ಜುನನ ತರ್ಕ ತನ್ನ ವೈಯಕ್ತಿಕ ದುಃಖದಿಂದ ಸಮಾಜದ ಪರಿಣಾಮಗಳ ಕಡೆಗೆ ತಿರುಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಕುಲಧರ್ಮ ಎಂದರೆ ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರದ ವಿಧಿಯಂತೆ ಒಂದು ಕುಟುಂಬ ನಡೆಸಿಕೊಂಡು ಬಂದ ಕರ್ತವ್ಯಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಆಚರಣೆಗಳು ಎಂದು ಸ್ವಾಮಿ ಶಿವಾನಂದರು ವಿವರಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಯುದ್ಧದಲ್ಲಿ ಹಿರಿಯರು ಸತ್ತರೆ ಆ ಆಚರಣೆಗಳನ್ನು ಬಲ್ಲವರು, ಮುಂದುವರಿಸುವವರು ಇಲ್ಲವಾಗುತ್ತಾರೆ ಎಂಬುದು ಅರ್ಜುನನ ಆತಂಕ.
From here Arjuna’s argument turns from his personal sorrow to the consequences for society. Swami Sivananda explains kuladharma as the duties and rites a family has kept up according to the injunctions of scripture. Arjuna’s fear is that if the elders die in battle, those who know these rites and would carry them on will be gone.
ಇಲ್ಲಿಂದ ನಲವತ್ತನಾಲ್ಕನೆಯ ಶ್ಲೋಕದವರೆಗಿನ ಮಾತುಗಳನ್ನು ಓದುವಾಗ ಒಂದು ಸಂಗತಿ ನೆನಪಿರಲಿ. ಇವು ಅರ್ಜುನನ ತರ್ಕಗಳು, ಅವನ ಕಾಲದ ಸಾಮಾಜಿಕ ಚಿಂತನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬೇರೂರಿದವು, ಮತ್ತು ದುಃಖದ ಕ್ಷಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಹೇಳಿದವು. ಅದಲ್ಲದೆ ಎರಡನೆಯ ಅಧ್ಯಾಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಕೃಷ್ಣ ‘ನೀನು ಪಂಡಿತನಂತೆ ಮಾತಾಡುತ್ತೀಯೆ, ಆದರೆ ದುಃಖಿಸಬಾರದವರಿಗಾಗಿ ದುಃಖಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದೀಯೆ’ ಎಂದು ಈ ಮಾತುಗಳ ಒಟ್ಟು ಧಾಟಿಗೆ ಉತ್ತರ ಕೊಡುತ್ತಾನೆ.
While reading the words from here to the forty-fourth verse, keep one thing in mind. These are Arjuna’s arguments, rooted in the social thought of his age and spoken in a moment of grief. Besides, in the second chapter Krishna answers the whole tenor of these words: you speak like a learned man, yet you grieve for those who should not be grieved for.
ಆಧಾರ: ಹಲವು ಮೂಲಗಳು. ವ್ಯಾಖ್ಯಾನಕಾರರ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯ ಭಿನ್ನವಾಗಿರುವಲ್ಲಿ ಎರಡೂ ಅರ್ಥಗಳನ್ನು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಕೊಟ್ಟಿದ್ದೇವೆ.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today
ಒಂದು ತಲೆಮಾರು ಹೋದಾಗ ಮನೆಯಿಂದ ಹೋಗುವುದು ಕೇವಲ ಜನರಲ್ಲ. ಹಬ್ಬದ ಅಡುಗೆಯ ಅಳತೆ, ಪೂಜೆಯ ಕ್ರಮ, ಹಳೆಯ ಹಾಡು, ಊರಿನ ನೆನಪು, ಯಾರು ಯಾರಿಗೆ ಏನಾಗಬೇಕು ಎಂಬ ನಂಟಿನ ನಕ್ಷೆ, ಇವೆಲ್ಲವೂ ಅವರೊಂದಿಗೆ ಹೋಗುತ್ತವೆ.
When a generation passes, it is not only people who leave a home. The measures for the festival cooking, the order of the puja, an old song, the memory of the village, the map of who is what to whom: all of it goes with them.
ಅರ್ಜುನನ ಈ ಆತಂಕದಲ್ಲಿ ಇಂದಿಗೂ ಅರ್ಥವಾಗುವ ಒಂದು ಸತ್ಯವಿದೆ. ಅಜ್ಜಿ ಹೋದ ನಂತರವೇ ‘ಅದನ್ನು ಅವರನ್ನು ಕೇಳಿಕೊಳ್ಳಬೇಕಿತ್ತು’ ಎಂದು ನಮಗೆ ಅನಿಸುವುದು. ಯೋಚಿಸಿ ನೋಡಿ: ನಮ್ಮ ಮನೆಯ ಹಿರಿಯರನ್ನು ನಾವು ಇನ್ನೂ ಏನನ್ನು ಕೇಳಿಲ್ಲ?
In Arjuna’s fear there is a truth we still understand. Only after grandmother is gone do we feel we should have asked her. Think about it: what have we still not asked the elders of our house?
