Seated for a meal, before the first mouthful

About thirty seconds for both verses

The act of offering is Brahman, the offering is Brahman, offered by Brahman into the fire that is Brahman. One who sees Brahman in every action reaches Brahman alone.

Becoming Vaishvanara, the fire of digestion, I dwell in the bodies of living beings. Joined with the inward and outward breaths, I digest food of four kinds.

About these verses

In the fourth chapter of the Gita, Krishna describes many kinds of sacrifice, and this is the first of those verses. Shankaracharya explains that the one who offers, the offering, the fire and the result are all forms of one reality.

The verse from the fifteenth chapter sees digestion itself as the Lord’s work. Commentators explain the four kinds of food as what is chewed, swallowed, licked and sucked.

Saying the two together at meals is not a command of the Gita but a pairing made by tradition. Some say only the first verse. Others add the peace chant om saha navavatu after it.

Seen with a physician’s eye too, there is something subtle here. Studies suggest we are more likely to eat more than we need when we eat in a hurry, looking at a phone, without attention. This thirty-second pause brings the meal back to attention.

Before the food reaches the plate, those who worked the field, who cooked and who served are all part of that offering. Seen that way, a meal does not stay an ordinary act.
