ಮಗು ಹುಟ್ಟಿದ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಅದರ ಬುದ್ಧಿಶಕ್ತಿಗಾಗಿ ಹೇಳುವ ಎರಡು ಸಾಲಿನ ವೈದಿಕ ಮಂತ್ರ ಇದು.
ಸವಿತೃ, ಸರಸ್ವತೀ ಮತ್ತು ಅಶ್ವಿನೀದೇವತೆಗಳು ಈ ಮಗುವಿಗೆ ಮೇಧೆಯನ್ನು ಕೊಡಲಿ ಎಂದು ಈ ಮಂತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ಬೇಡುತ್ತೇವೆ. ಮೇಧೆ ಎಂದರೆ ಕೇಳಿದ್ದನ್ನು ಗ್ರಹಿಸಿ ನೆನಪಿನಲ್ಲಿಡುವ ಬುದ್ಧಿ.
ಶ್ಲೋಕ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ಮೇಧಾಂ ತೇ ದೇವಃ ಸವಿತಾ ಮೇಧಾಂ ದೇವೀ ಸರಸ್ವತೀ ।
ಮೇಧಾಂ ತೇ ಅಶ್ವಿನೌ ದೇವಾವಾಧತ್ತಾಂ ಪುಷ್ಕರಸ್ರಜೌ ॥

मेधां ते देवः सविता मेधां देवी सरस्वती ।
मेधां ते अश्विनौ देवावाधत्तां पुष्करस्रजौ ॥

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ
- ಮೇಧಾಂ (मेधां, medhāṃ) = ಮೇಧೆಯನ್ನು, ಗ್ರಹಿಸುವ ಬುದ್ಧಿಯನ್ನು (intelligence, the power to grasp and retain)
- ತೇ (ते, te) = ನಿನಗೆ (to you)
- ದೇವಃ (देवः, devaḥ) = ದೇವನು (the god)
- ಸವಿತಾ (सविता, savitā) = ಸವಿತೃ, ಪ್ರೇರಕನಾದ ಸೂರ್ಯದೇವ (Savitr, the impelling sun-god)
- ಮೇಧಾಂ (मेधां, medhāṃ) = ಮೇಧೆಯನ್ನು (intelligence)
- ದೇವೀ (देवी, devī) = ದೇವಿಯು (the goddess)
- ಸರಸ್ವತೀ (सरस्वती, sarasvatī) = ಸರಸ್ವತಿ, ವಿದ್ಯೆಯ ದೇವಿ (Sarasvati, goddess of learning)

- ಪುಷ್ಕರಸ್ರಜೌ (पुष्करस्रजौ, puṣkarasrajau) = ಕಮಲದ ಹಾರ ಧರಿಸಿದವರಿಬ್ಬರು (the two wearing garlands of lotus)
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ಸವಿತೃ ದೇವನು ನಿನಗೆ ಮೇಧೆಯನ್ನು ಕೊಡಲಿ. ಸರಸ್ವತೀ ದೇವಿಯೂ ನಿನಗೆ ಮೇಧೆಯನ್ನು ಕೊಡಲಿ. ಕಮಲದ ಹಾರ ಧರಿಸಿದ ಅಶ್ವಿನೀ ದೇವತೆಗಳಿಬ್ಬರೂ ನಿನ್ನಲ್ಲಿ ಮೇಧೆಯನ್ನು ಇರಿಸಲಿ.
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)
May the god Savitr give you intelligence. May the goddess Sarasvati give you intelligence. May the two Ashvins, wearing garlands of lotus, place intelligence in you.
ಈ ಮಂತ್ರದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this mantra
ಇದು ಆಶ್ವಲಾಯನ ಗೃಹ್ಯಸೂತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ಬರುವ ಮೇಧಾಜನನ ಮಂತ್ರ. ನವಜಾತ ಶಿಶುವಿಗೆ ತುಪ್ಪ, ಜೇನು ಮತ್ತು ಚಿನ್ನದ ಕಣವನ್ನು ಸವರಿದ ನಂತರ ತಂದೆ ಇದನ್ನು ಮಗುವಿನ ಕಿವಿಗಳ ಬಳಿ ಜಪಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಪಠ್ಯದ ಆವೃತ್ತಿಗಳನ್ನು ಅನುಸರಿಸಿ ಈ ಮಂತ್ರ ನಾಮಕರಣದ ಸಂದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿಯೂ ಬರುತ್ತದೆ.
This is the medhajanana mantra of the Ashvalayana Grihya Sutra. After the newborn is given ghee, honey and gold, the father murmurs it near the child’s ears. Some manuals of the rite also place it at the naming ceremony.
ಕೆಲವು ಪ್ರಕಟಿತ ಪಾಠಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಕೊನೆಯ ಪದ ಪುಷ್ಕರಸ್ರಜಾ ಎಂದು ಇದೆ. ಆಶ್ವಲಾಯನ ಸೂತ್ರದ ಪಾಠದಲ್ಲಿ ಇಬ್ಬರು ಅಶ್ವಿನರಿಗೆ ಹೊಂದುವ ಪುಷ್ಕರಸ್ರಜೌ ಎಂಬ ರೂಪ ಬರುತ್ತದೆ. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಅದನ್ನೇ ಬಳಸಿದ್ದೇವೆ.
Some printed texts give the last word as pushkarasraja. The Ashvalayana text has pushkarasrajau, the dual that fits the two Ashvins. We use that form.
ಮಹಾನಾರಾಯಣ ಉಪನಿಷತ್ತಿನ ಮೇಧಾ ಸೂಕ್ತದಲ್ಲಿ ಇದೇ ರೀತಿಯ ಮೇಧೆಯ ಪ್ರಾರ್ಥನೆಗಳಿವೆ. ಆದರೆ ಆ ಮಂತ್ರಗಳು ಬೇರೆ.
The Medha Sukta of the Mahanarayana Upanishad has similar prayers for intelligence, but its mantras are different.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today
ಮಗುವಿನ ಬುದ್ಧಿ ಬೆಳೆಯುವುದು ಹೆಚ್ಚಾಗಿ ಮನೆಯ ಮಾತು, ಹಾಡು ಮತ್ತು ಪ್ರೀತಿಯ ಸ್ಪರ್ಶದಿಂದ. ಈ ಮಂತ್ರ ಹೇಳುವ ಕ್ಷಣ ಮಗುವಿನ ಕಿವಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಮಾತನ್ನು ಮೊದಲು ಇಡುವ ಕ್ಷಣವೂ ಆಗುತ್ತದೆ.
A child’s mind grows mostly through the words, songs and touch of home. The moment of this mantra is also the first time a kind word is placed in the child’s ear.
ಇದೊಂದು ಸಂಪ್ರದಾಯದ ಹಾರೈಕೆ. ಮಗುವಿನ ಬೆಳವಣಿಗೆಗೆ ಪೌಷ್ಟಿಕ ಆಹಾರ, ನಿದ್ರೆ, ಆರೋಗ್ಯ ತಪಾಸಣೆ ಮತ್ತು ಪ್ರೀತಿಯ ಒಡನಾಟವೂ ಬೇಕು. ಮಗುವಿನ ಬೆಳವಣಿಗೆಯ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಚಿಂತೆಯಿದ್ದರೆ ವೈದ್ಯರನ್ನು ಕಾಣಬೇಕು. ಪ್ರಾರ್ಥನೆ ಚಿಕಿತ್ಸೆಗೆ ಬದಲಾಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ.
This is a traditional blessing. A child also needs good food, sleep, health checks and loving company. If we worry about a child’s development, we should see a doctor. Prayer does not replace treatment.
