In the Surya upasthana of sandhyavandana, standing and facing the sun

About fifteen seconds

ಯಜುರ್ವೇದ 36.24 ಎಂಬ ಸಂಖ್ಯೆ ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯ ಉಲ್ಲೇಖ, ಅದನ್ನು ನಾವು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಖಚಿತಪಡಿಸಿಲ್ಲ · Rigveda 7.66.16 (only two lines there). The Yajurveda mantra carries more lines. The number Yajurveda 36.24 is the usual citation and we have not confirmed it here

About this mantra

In the Rigveda this mantra ends at pashyema and jivema. The Yajurveda sandhyavandana text also has the line shrinuyama sharadah shatam, and we have included it.

The full Yajurveda mantra goes on with wishes to speak, to never be downcast and to live beyond a hundred. Some traditions recite those lines too. Please follow the text of your own tradition.

Shukra is read as bright or pure. Purastat means in front or from the east. Here we take it as from the east, which suits the rising sun.

Sources: several. Where versions differ, we have noted it here.

For life today

Seeing, hearing and living for a hundred years is a wish and a belief of the tradition. It is not a medical promise. If there is a problem with the eyes, ears or health, we should seek a doctor’s treatment. Prayer does not replace it.

This mantra teaches us to look at our senses with gratitude. Before the sun we can remember that having eyes and ears is itself a gift.
