ಅಫಲಾಕಾಂಕ್ಷಿಭಿರ್ಯಜ್ಞೋ ವಿಧಿದೃಷ್ಟೋ ಯ ಇಜ್ಯತೇ।
ಯಷ್ಟವ್ಯಮೇವೇತಿ ಮನಃ ಸಮಾಧಾಯ ಸ ಸಾತ್ತ್ವಿಕಃ ॥ 11 ॥
ಶ್ಲೋಕ (ದೇವನಾಗರಿ)
अफलाकाङ्क्षिभिर्यज्ञो विधिदृष्टो य इज्यते।
यष्टव्यमेवेति मनः समाधाय स सात्त्विकः ॥ 11 ॥

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ
- ಅಫಲಾಕಾಂಕ್ಷಿಭಿಃ (अफलाकाङ्क्षिभिः, aphalākāṅkṣibhiḥ) = ಫಲವನ್ನು ಬಯಸದವರಿಂದ (by those who do not crave the fruit)
- ವಿಧಿದೃಷ್ಟಃ ಯಃ ಯಜ್ಞಃ ಇಜ್ಯತೇ (विधिदृष्टः यः यज्ञः इज्यते, vidhidṛṣṭaḥ yaḥ yajñaḥ ijyate) = ವಿಧಿಯಂತೆ ಮಾಡುವ ಯಾವ ಯಜ್ಞ (the sacrifice that is offered as the rules ordain)
- ಯಷ್ಟವ್ಯಮ್ ಏವ ಇತಿ ಮನಃ ಸಮಾಧಾಯ (यष्टव्यम् एव इति मनः समाधाय, yaṣṭavyam eva iti manaḥ samādhāya) = ಮಾಡಲೇಬೇಕಾದ್ದು ಎಂದು ಮನಸ್ಸನ್ನು ನೆಲೆಗೊಳಿಸಿ (with the mind settled that it simply ought to be done)
- ಸಃ ಸಾತ್ತ್ವಿಕಃ (सः सात्त्विकः, saḥ sāttvikaḥ) = ಅದು ಸಾತ್ತ್ವಿಕ (that is sattvic)
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ಫಲವನ್ನು ಬಯಸದವರು, ‘ಇದನ್ನು ಮಾಡಲೇಬೇಕು’ ಎಂದು ಮನಸ್ಸನ್ನು ನೆಲೆಗೊಳಿಸಿ, ವಿಧಿಯಂತೆ ಮಾಡುವ ಯಜ್ಞ ಸಾತ್ತ್ವಿಕ.
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)
The sacrifice offered as the rules ordain by those who do not crave its fruit, with the mind settled that it simply ought to be done, is sattvic.
ಶ್ಲೋಕ 17.11ರ ವಿವರಣೆContext and commentary on verse 17.11
‘ಯಷ್ಟವ್ಯಮೇವ’, ಮಾಡಲೇಬೇಕು, ಈ ಪದವೇ ಸಾತ್ತ್ವಿಕ ಯಜ್ಞದ ಗುರುತು. ಶಂಕರಾಚಾರ್ಯರ ಪ್ರಕಾರ ಯಜ್ಞವನ್ನು ಸರಿಯಾಗಿ ನೆರವೇರಿಸುವುದೇ ಕರ್ತವ್ಯ, ‘ಇದರಿಂದ ನನಗೆ ಏನೋ ಲಾಭವಾಗಬೇಕು’ ಎಂಬ ನಿರೀಕ್ಷೆಯಿಲ್ಲದೆ ಮನಸ್ಸನ್ನು ನಿಶ್ಚಯಿಸುವುದು. ‘ವಿಧಿದೃಷ್ಟ’ ಎಂದರೆ ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರದ ಆದೇಶದಲ್ಲಿ ಕಂಡಂತೆ.
‘Yashtavyam eva’, it simply ought to be done: this phrase itself is the mark of sattvic sacrifice. According to Shankara the duty is just to carry out the sacrifice rightly, settling the mind without the expectation that ‘some gain must come to me from this’. ‘Vidhidrishta’ means as seen in the command of scripture.
ರಾಮಾನುಜಾಚಾರ್ಯರು ‘ಯಷ್ಟವ್ಯಮೇವ’ಕ್ಕೆ ಭಕ್ತಿಯ ಆಳ ಕೊಡುತ್ತಾರೆ: ಭಗವಂತನ ಆರಾಧನೆಯಾದ್ದರಿಂದ ಅದೇ ತನ್ನ ಪ್ರಯೋಜನ ಎಂದು ತಿಳಿದು ಮಾಡುವುದು. ‘ವಿಧಿದೃಷ್ಟ’ ಅವರಿಗೆ ಮಂತ್ರ, ದ್ರವ್ಯ, ಕ್ರಿಯೆಗಳಿಂದ ಕೂಡಿದ್ದು. ಶ್ರೀಧರ ಸ್ವಾಮಿಗಳ ಪ್ರಕಾರ ಇಲ್ಲಿಂದ ಮೂರು ಶ್ಲೋಕಗಳು ಯಜ್ಞದ ಮೂರು ಬಗೆಗಳು. ಮಧ್ವಾಚಾರ್ಯರ ವಿವರಣೆ ನಮ್ಮ ಮೂಲ ಪಠ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕಕ್ಕೆ ಇಲ್ಲ.
Ramanuja gives ‘yashtavyam eva’ the depth of devotion: doing it knowing that, being worship of the Lord, it is its own purpose. ‘Vidhidrishta’ for him is complete with mantra, materials and actions. According to Sridhara Swami the three verses from here are the three kinds of sacrifice. Madhva’s comment on this verse is not in our source text.
ಆಧಾರ: ಹಲವು ಮೂಲಗಳು. ವ್ಯಾಖ್ಯಾನಕಾರರ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯ ಭಿನ್ನವಾಗಿರುವಲ್ಲಿ ಎರಡೂ ಅರ್ಥಗಳನ್ನು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಕೊಟ್ಟಿದ್ದೇವೆ.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today
‘ಮಾಡಲೇಬೇಕಾದ್ದು’ ಎಂಬ ಭಾವದ ಕೆಲಸಗಳು ಬದುಕಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಅನೇಕ: ಮಕ್ಕಳಿಗೆ ಸಮಯಕ್ಕೆ ಲಸಿಕೆ ಹಾಕಿಸುವುದು, ಹಿರಿಯರ ಆರೈಕೆ, ಊರಿನ ಕೆರೆಯ ಸ್ವಚ್ಛತೆ. ಅವುಗಳಿಗೆ ಪ್ರತಿಫಲದ ಲೆಕ್ಕ ಬೇಕಿಲ್ಲ.
There are many tasks in life done in the spirit of ‘this ought to be done’: getting children vaccinated on time, caring for elders, keeping the village tank clean. They need no reckoning of reward.
ಫಲದ ಚಿಂತೆ ಇಲ್ಲದಾಗ ಕೆಲಸದ ಗುಣಮಟ್ಟದ ಮೇಲೆ ಗಮನ ಉಳಿಯುತ್ತದೆ. ಅದು ಕೆಲಸವನ್ನೂ ಮನಸ್ಸನ್ನೂ ಹಗುರಗೊಳಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.
When there is no worry about the fruit, attention stays on the quality of the work. That lightens both the work and the mind.
