Context and commentary on verse 14.11
From here three verses give the signs seen when the gunas increase. According to Shankara the ‘gates’ of the body are all the senses such as the ear, the doors through which the Self knows the world. When the light of the inner organ, clear awareness, arises in them, that is the sign of sattva.
Ramanuja says briefly: when, in the gates of knowing such as the eye, knowledge arises that shows a thing as it is, know that sattva has increased. Sridhara Swami calls the body ‘bhogayatana’, the house of the self’s experience. Madhva’s comment on this verse is not in our source text.

For life today
Hearing clearly, seeing rightly, not misunderstanding: these are the everyday signs of sattva.
For such clarity the gates of the body must be looked after too: eye tests, protecting the ears from loud noise, and resting the eyes from screens before sleep.
