Context and commentary on verse 14.1

The fourteenth chapter continues the previous one. That chapter had said ‘attachment to the gunas is the cause of births’ (13.21). What the gunas are, how they bind, and how one is freed from them: that is this chapter. Sridhara Swami says just this in his opening verse: showing that prakriti and purusha are not independent, the chapter expands on the variety of worldly existence that comes from attachment to the gunas. According to Madhva the chapters from here on mainly teach the means of practice.

‘The best of all knowledge’: better than which knowledge? Shankara makes it clear: not better than the qualities from humility onward that were earlier called ‘knowledge’, but better than kinds of knowledge concerned with sacrifice and the like. It is best because its fruit is the best. For Ramanuja ‘param’ means a knowledge other than what was said before, concerning the gunas such as sattva that lie within prakriti and purusha, and the sages who reflected on it went from this round of worldly existence to the supreme perfection.

‘Bhuyah’, again. A good teacher does not say the key lesson once and leave it, but says it again and again from different angles.

Instructions about medicines should be given to a patient the same way: once in speech, once in writing, and finally by asking, ‘Tell me how you will take them’, to be sure.
