Context and commentary on verse 14.15

Shankara and Sridhara Swami read this plainly: one who dies in rajas is born among humans attached to action, one who dies in tamas in wombs such as those of cattle. Ramanuja adds a detail: the one of rajas is born in a family of those who act for fruits and becomes fit for actions whose fruit is heaven and the like, and the one of tamas gets a birth in which no human aim can be taken up.

These verses speak of the fruit of the gunas in the language of rebirth. Many note that today’s reader can see their core within this very life: the nature we cultivate decides where we arrive. Madhva’s comment on this verse is not in our source text.

For life today

This verse should not be used as a judgement on children born with intellectual disability or physical disability. These are conditions with medical causes, and what those children and their families need is support, not blame.

The right reading applies it to ourselves alone: which nature am I watering?
