Context and commentary on verse 15.17
Sridhara Swami finds the difference in the two parts of the name ‘paramatma’ itself: being ‘atma’, Self, he is other than the insentient perishable, and being ‘parama’, supreme, other than the imperishable too. For Shankara he is ‘supreme’ in relation to the selves such as the body imagined through ignorance, and ‘Self’ as the inner awareness of all beings. By the power of his awareness he enters and sustains the three worlds, bhuh, bhuvah and svah.
According to Ramanuja the highest Person is a reality distinct from both the bound and the released selves. This is known, he says, from the very fact that all the shrutis call him ‘the supreme Self’. How distinct? As the Lord who enters and sustains the three worlds, imperishable, ruling all. Madhva explains this verse together with the previous one: the highest Person is the Lord, higher even than prakriti.

‘Bibharti’, he sustains. The feeling that we alone are carrying everything is very tiring. The reminder that we too are being carried lightens that load.
Those who carry all the burdens of a household alone often hesitate to ask for help. Sharing responsibility is not weakness.
