Context and commentary on verse 15.6
This verse echoes the Katha Upanishad’s ‘na tatra suryo bhati na chandratarakam’. Shankara calls it ‘a state whose nature is light’: though the sun has power to light up everything, it cannot light up this, for this is the source of all lights. Sridhara Swami notes one consequence: since it is not an object of the light of sun and the rest, it has no flaws such as inertness, cold or heat.
Ramanuja calls it the light of the self: it is knowledge that lights up everything, and outer lights only help by removing the darkness between the senses and their objects. What covers that light is beginningless karma, and what removes it is the non-attachment that comes from surrender. Madhva says the description of the Lord’s own nature begins here.

For life today
Even when outer light fades, the inner light remains. Many who have lost their sight live full lives in music, reading and work. What they need is not pity but opportunity.
‘Yad gatva na nivartante’, reaching it, they do not return. Everyone has a longing for a home from which one need not set out again. The Gita gives that longing a name.
