O lord of thieves, this mind of mine has become the puppet of greed and the rest. Bent upon carrying off what belongs to others, ready to break into the rich man’s house, it wanders about in many directions. O Shankara, O all-pervading one, how am I to bear this thief that is my mind? Take him under your own control, and show mercy to me, who am without offence.
Context and commentary on verse 22
The picture in the verse is that of a housebreaker. The mind, in the service of greed and delusion, keeps its eye on what belongs to others and circles the rich man’s house. The word paratantra is the fine touch here. It means that the thief himself is not free, for others put him to work. The mind moves about like a labourer under contract to the desires.
The vocative taskarapate at the end of the second line is the turn of the verse. Calling Shiva the lord of thieves comes from the Namaka of the Shri Rudram in the Yajur Veda, where Rudra is saluted as the lord of thieves and of robbers as well. Shankara makes clever use here of that hymn, which leaves nothing outside. The argument is that this thief belongs to your own band, and so the duty of holding him is yours.
The third and fourth lines proceed like a complaint. The mind is the thief, I am without offence, and so the prayer is that the thief be taken into your custody and I be let off. In the words mayi niraparadhe there is the shade of a Vedantic position, and many readers find in them the sense that it is the inner instrument that acts, while the stain of the act does not touch the witness that watches. There is also a hint of the devotional path. The mind need not be killed. It is enough to change its master.
The line kathamiha sahe shankara vibho returns unchanged at the end of verse 23. Many readers see in this repetition a sign that the two verses are to be read as a pair. In the one, what cannot be borne is the thieving of the mind, and in the other the grief of searching and still not seeing. One small note on the words: san is the present participle of the root as, and means being. The metre is shikharini.

Standing in a bank queue, the eye goes of itself to the bundle of notes in the hands of the person ahead. We want nothing from it, yet the mind will not be still until it has counted them.
The ease of this verse lies in a small separation. We have not chosen everything the mind does. It is enough to notice the movement and not lend it our hands, and there is no need to conclude that we are thieves ourselves.
