O Girisha, the golden mountain Meru is in your hand, Kubera the lord of wealth stands at your side, the wish-granting tree, the divine cow and the wish-granting gem are all household things in your house, the cool-rayed moon is on your head, and every good thing rests at your two feet. What object, then, can I give you? Let my mind be yours.

Context and commentary on verse 27

The first three lines use the same construction again and again. Five statements of the form ‘this being here, that being there’ are strung together, and at the end comes the question: what then am I to give? In the previous verse the devotee spoke of his longing to touch. Here he thinks about an offering, and finds that he has nothing to offer.

Two senses are given for ‘karasthe hemadrau’. Some recall the traditional account in which Mount Meru itself became Shiva’s bow at the burning of Tripura. Others read it more simply: with the golden mountain in his hand, what talk can there be of offering him gold? The Puranas describe Kubera as king of the yakshas, lord of wealth, dwelling at Alaka near Kailasa and a devotee of Shiva. Wealth, then, stands waiting at his side.

The kalpavriksha, the kamadhenu and the chintamani are the three celestial wish-fulfillers: the tree gives what is asked, the cow yields what is wanted, the gem brings what is thought of. The verse places them in the line of household goods with the single word ‘grihasthe’. Besides this, the moon is the ornament of his head, and all good fortune rests at his feet. There is nothing Shiva lacks.

The answer in the last line is simple: ‘bhavatu bhavadartham mama manah’, let my mind be yours. In the two words ‘bhavatu’ and ‘bhavadartham’ the syllable bhava sounds twice over, once in the sense of becoming and once as Bhava, a name of Shiva. When everything is already his, the one thing left in a person’s hands is the mind, because the mind is the one thing he can withhold. This offering of the mind itself recalls the words ‘manmana bhava’ in the Bhagavad Gita.

The verse is in the shikharini metre, a quarter of seventeen syllables with a pause after the sixth. It is generally said to be the last verse in shikharini in this opening stretch of the Shivananda Lahari, for from the next verse the metre turns to shardulavikridita.

For life today

In a classroom a child folds a drawing of its own making and leaves it on the teacher’s table. The teacher gains nothing from the drawing, yet that was all the child had.

The difficulty of what to give to someone who has more than we do, and who wants nothing from us, comes to us now and then. What is left to give is usually not an object but our attention and a share of our mind.
