With reverence the companies of the good-minded make the rising mind their churning rod, fit to it the rope of firm devotion, and churn the ocean of the Veda. From it they then draw out Soma, the wish-granting tree, the wish-yielding cow of the gods, the wish-gem, the nectar of unending bliss and the unbroken good fortune of Lakshmi, and spread them out for the wise.
Context and commentary on verse 37
The story behind the verse is well known. Gods and asuras made Mount Mandara their churning rod and Vasuki their rope, and churned the ocean of milk. Out of it rose the moon, the wish-granting tree, the divine cow, Lakshmi and, last of all, the nectar. The lists of what came up are not the same in all the Puranas, and some include the wish-gem among them.
The poet turns the whole picture inward. The ocean to be churned is the Veda, deep and wide, and much the same to the eye all over. The rod is the mind on the rise. The rope is firm devotion. Those who churn are companies of the good-minded, which carries the hint that this is not one person’s work. In churning, the rope must be pulled from each side in turn, so the labour of repetition is already inside the image.
The first of the things that rise is itself a pun. Soma is the moon that came out of the ocean. Split as sa and Uma it is Shiva, he who is with Uma. Besides that, in the Veda soma is the name of the pressed juice of the sacrifice. So the undertone of the verse is that the first thing won by churning the Veda is Shiva himself. The word sumanas too has three senses: one of good mind, a god, and a flower. The word keeps alive the memory that in the story it was the gods who churned.
The other things may be read as inward yields. The wish-granting tree gives what is asked, the divine cow gives what is needed, the wish-gem gives what is thought of. But the true gain is the nectar of unending bliss that comes at the end of the list, and the rest are found along the way. Most readers attach dhimatam to the wish-gem, the wish-gem of the wise, while others take it with the whole list, so that all these come to those who have wisdom.
In verse 36 the mind was a pot, and here it is a churning rod. In both, the mind is an instrument and Shiva is the gain. Since churning goes back and forth, the image suits a poem that takes its very name from waves. The metre of this verse is shardulavikridita, nineteen syllables to the quarter, with the pause after the twelfth.

In a corner of a library there are people who turn over the same lesson for months together. The page is the same on the first day and on the tenth, and then one day it opens out of itself.
It is not enough to pull a churning rope from one side. It must be pulled from each side in turn. Our learning and our work are like this, and nothing rises from a single effort. Remembering that the yield is hidden in that tiresome repetition makes the labour lighter.
