ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)
O Shiva, in worshipping you there is sarupya, likeness of form. In proclaiming the name ‘Mahadeva’ there is samipya, nearness. In the company and conversation of those who are foremost in devotion to Shiva there is salokya, dwelling in your world. O husband of Bhavani, in meditating on all that moves and does not move as your body there is sayujya, union. O Lord, all this is accomplished for me here itself. I am fulfilled.
ಶ್ಲೋಕ 28ರ ವಿವರಣೆContext and commentary on verse 28
The verse is plainly built: four lines, four kinds of service, and for each a kind of liberation. The small word ‘atra’, here, at the end matters a great deal. Liberation is not something to be found somewhere after death, the poet says, but is accomplished here and now. Verses 25 and 26 asked ‘when?’. Here that waiting is over and the contentment of having already received it takes its place.
Tradition counts liberation in four kinds. Salokya is being in the same world as the god. Samipya is being near him, in his presence. Sarupya is coming to resemble his form. Sayujya is merging into union with him. In the common reckoning this is the ascending order, with sayujya last. The verse, however, begins with sarupya and ends with sayujya, and the order of the middle two differs from the traditional list.
There is an inner logic to the pairing of each service with its fruit. One who performs worship looks at the god’s form day after day, and the likeness of that form settles into him. Calling a name aloud is like calling someone at a distance nearer, so nearness follows from sankirtana. Sitting and talking among devotees is already to live in one world, so salokya follows from good company. When everything is meditated upon as his body, no room is left to stand apart, so union follows from that meditation.
The third fruit is worth noticing. Besides practice done sitting alone, the verse counts the company of devotees and the talk exchanged with them as a means in its own right. ‘Dhurya’ means the ox that bears the yoke, that is, one who takes the load at the front, so the phrase means the company of those who lead in devotion to Shiva. Besides this, the phrase ‘characharatmakatanu’ suits both the Shaiva and the Advaita background, holding the view that the whole world is the body of the Lord.
The metre of the Shivananda Lahari changes here. The preceding verses were in shikharini, of seventeen syllables. This verse is in shardulavikridita, nineteen syllables to the quarter with a pause after the twelfth. The wider line carries the long words sarupya, samipya, salokya and sayujya, and the long compounds that go with them, with ease.
