Context and commentary on verse 30
The verse takes up the order of worship itself. Fanning with a cloth, offering flowers, applying perfume, cooking food for the offering, preparing the vessel: these are the ordinary parts of attendance on a deity. For each service, the poet says, the power of a particular god is needed, and with the single word ‘if’ he admits that he does not have it.
The charm of the verse lies in its double senses. ‘Sahasrakara’ is the sun of a thousand rays and also one with a thousand hands, since kara means both ray and hand. ‘Gandhavaha’ is that which carries fragrance along, the wind. ‘Barhirmukha’ names the gods who take the oblation through the mouth of fire, and Agni presides over them, though some read barhirmukha as Agni himself. ‘Kanchanagarbha’ is Brahma the golden-wombed, and equally a vessel with gold in its belly.
There is no single answer to why the nature of Vishnu should be needed for worship with flowers. Many read it thus: Vishnu is he who pervades everything, so only he has the power to bring and offer every flower that blooms anywhere. Tradition also records that some recall here the account of Vishnu worshipping Shiva with a thousand lotuses and offering his own eye when one lotus fell short. In either sense the point is the same: worship of that order is beyond the reach of human hands.
There is a fine turn inside the verse’s humility. To say that a god’s power is needed in order to serve is also to say that Shiva gains nothing from human service. Verse 27 asked what could be given and gave the mind. This verse says the same thing from the side of service. The four addresses that come at the close, wearer of the young moon, Pashupati, Lord, teacher of the three worlds, follow one upon another and end the request gently. The metre is shardulavikridita, a quarter of nineteen syllables.

Standing in a field in the harvest days, there is a great deal of work to be done and too few hands. It occurs to us then that ten more hands would have been good.
At home, at work and beside those who depend on us, we meet this shortfall again and again. Our strength does not stretch to all that should be done. But those who ask do not want a thousand hands from us. They want the honest work of the two we have.
