In this samsara, which is filled with bad hopes, which fastens one to the door of a bad master’s house, which has no end, which is the abode of sin and the begetter of sorrow, why do you not take away my weariness? For whose benefit is it? Tell me, O Shiva. And if this itself is your pleasure, then we are fulfilled indeed.

Context and commentary on verse 19

The first two quarters give samsara five epithets, and every one of them begins with the prefix ‘dur’, bad or hard. Filled with bad hopes, fastening one to a bad master’s door, impossible to cross, a house of sin, a begetter of sorrow. The alliteration falls like the same sound struck again and again, and brings the weariness into the very sound. All five stand in the locative, agreeing with ‘samsare’.

‘Duradhipagrihadvaraghatake’ is the living picture of the verse: the state of a servant standing and waiting at the door of a bad master’s house. ‘Ghataka’ means what joins or fastens, so samsara is what ties us to that doorstep. Sanskrit poets often speak of the humiliation of service that keeps one waiting at the doors of the unworthy, and that same hurt comes here as a comparison for samsara.

The third quarter asks two questions: why do you not take away my weariness, and for whose benefit is this weariness? The second is the sharper one, hinting that his exhaustion profits neither him nor anyone else. One way of reading ‘vadeyam’ is to split it as ‘vada iyam’, tell me, if this itself is your pleasure. Another takes it as the verb form ‘vadeyam’, what am I to say.

In the last quarter the verse turns. The man who has finished complaining ends by surrendering. Saying that if his weariness is what pleases Shiva then even in that they are fulfilled changes a demand into an acceptance. The plural ‘vayam’, we, is used here, and readers take it either as the poet speaking of himself in a respectful plural or as speaking for all devotees. The metre is shikharini.

For life today

The night duty roster hangs on the wall. Before one week of shifts is over, the list for the next week is already up. The feeling that the work has no end comes to all of us now and then.

That weariness is not false, and there is nothing wrong in saying it aloud. But after saying it we need a certain calm to go back to the work. This verse begins in complaint and ends in acceptance.
