O Girisha, when shall I see you, take your glorious feet in both my hands, bear them on my head, on my eyes and on my chest, embrace them, breathe in the fragrance of open lotuses that rises from them, and feel in my heart the joy that Brahma and the rest do not obtain?

ಶ್ಲೋಕ 26ರ ವಿವರಣೆContext and commentary on verse 26

Verse 25 ended with ‘when shall I see you’. This verse takes up the same words and carries them further: and after seeing, what then? The two can be read as a pair. The earlier one is a sight beheld from a distance, this one is the moment of drawing near and touching. The verb stands in the future tense, so this reads not as the report of an experience already had but as the longing for a moment still to come.

The verse moves in order: taking the feet in both hands, placing them on the head, pressing them to the eyes, holding them to the chest. This descent from head to chest is a movement from reverence towards affection. The familiar custom of our country, touching something sacred or an elder’s feet and then pressing the hand to one’s eyes, has come and settled inside the verse.

Shiva’s feet are conventionally called lotus feet. Here the poet does not state the comparison outright, but says that the fragrance of open lotuses rises from the feet themselves. ‘Sphuta’ means already open, not still closed. The comparison thus turns into an experience, and the word lotus reaches the nose as well. Setting the two words gandha and parimala side by side suggests how thick the fragrance is.

Many read the phrase ‘the joy that Brahma and the rest do not obtain’ as more than a flourish of comparison. The suggestion is that the nearness which those who praise him from high station and formal worship do not reach is reached by the devotee who touches. There is a fine grammatical point here. ‘Alabhyam’ is a feminine form, so it does not qualify the feet but ‘mudam’, the joy. ‘Parimala’ at the end of the third line joins with ‘nalabhyam’ at the start of the fourth to give ‘parimalan alabhyam’. The metre is shikharini.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today

Stepping into the courtyard of the house we were born in after many years, it is the smell of the earth floor and the hearth inside that reaches us first. Words come later.

Our love does not always begin with explanation. It begins with touch, with a smell, with the place we always sit. This verse reminds us that the body has a share in worship too.
