Let a man dwell in a cave or in a house, out in the open, in a forest or on a mountain peak, in water or in fire. Tell me, what is the fruit of a dwelling place? O Shambhu, he whose inner mind stands always at your feet, that is yoga, he is the supreme yogi, and he is the one who is happy.
Context and commentary on verse 12
The places in the list are not merely places. They are the places of austerity. Cave, forest and hill top are the sites of solitude, and tradition speaks of standing in water and sitting surrounded by fires as hard observances. Into the middle of that row the poet slips the ordinary word ‘gehe’, in a house. One question then weighs them all together: ‘vasateh kim phalam’, what is the fruit of a dwelling place?
In ‘antahkaranam api’ the small word ‘api’ is the important one. It gives the sense that wherever the body may be, what counts is where the inner mind is. Antahkarana means the inner instrument, and in the usual reckoning it covers all four of mind, intellect, the sense of I, and memory. The question here is where thought, decision, the sense of oneself and remembrance all stand together.
‘Tava pade’ can be taken two ways. Pada means a foot, and pada also means a station or a state. So standing at your foot is also resting in your state. The verse thus gives yoga a definition of its own. In Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra, yoga is the stilling of the movements of the mind. Here yoga is the mind standing at Shiva’s feet, and of posture, place and procedure the verse says nothing.
To the question ‘vasateh kim phalam’ the verse gives three answers at once: ‘yogah asau’, ‘sa cha paramayogi’, ‘sa cha sukhi’. The state, the person and the fruit all arrive in one breath. The ‘paramasaukhyam vraja’ of the sixth verse returns here as ‘sa cha sukhi’. Vasatu and vasateh, two forms of one root, tie the two halves of the verse together. The metre is shikharini.

Moving from one rented room to another, we hope that this time we will find some peace. Once the boxes are opened and everything is put in its place, we notice that the old worries have come along too.
Changing a place is sometimes genuinely necessary, and the verse does not deny it. But what comes with us wherever we go is the mind, and the verse quietly reminds us that it needs some attention too.
