You alone are the giver of the highest fruit to the worlds. Hari and the rest, though they bear a divine station that is rooted in you, worship you again and again. O Shiva, how great is your generosity, and how small is my asking. When will you take up the protecting of me with a look filled with compassion?

Context and commentary on verse 18

The previous verse showed the row of gods crowding in to bow. Here they are named, and a reason for their bowing is given: their station itself came from Shiva, and so, bearing it, they return to him. The single word ‘tvanmulam’, rooted in you, carries the whole argument.

Note the distance between the two words ‘paramaphalada’ and ‘divyapadavi’. A divine station means heaven, authority, high office. That is a great fruit, but not the final one. The highest fruit means release. The stress of the line is that only one gives it. The verse does not scorn the fruits of other worship, it only marks their limit.

‘Harimukhah’ means Hari and the rest, that is Vishnu, Brahma, Indra and the others. This is a Shaiva hymn, yet there is no belittling of the other gods here. In Shankara’s tradition, as many read it, a difference of names does not touch the one reality, and within a hymn it is the usual practice to speak of one’s own chosen deity as the source of all.

The paired question in the third quarter is finely made: ‘kiyad va dakshinyam, madasha cha kiyati’, how much is your generosity, and how much is my hope? Two senses fit. One is that your giving is vast and my request small. The other is that, set side by side, they leave no reason for withholding. The word ‘dakshinya’ means the obligingness that does not send a petitioner away empty-handed.

‘Vahantah’ in the second quarter and ‘vahasi’ in the last are forms of the same root. The gods bear an office, and Shiva is asked to bear the charge of protecting the poet: the pairing is deliberate. The metre is shikharini.

In a workshop the new hands first ask one another. After a measurement has gone wrong once, they end by going to the old craftsman. The groundwork of all their skill came from there too.

As our competence grows it is easy to forget where it came from. Those who hold high places lose nothing by going back to the ones who taught them.
