Context and commentary on verse 35

Yogakshema is an old pair of words. Yoga is the getting of what one does not have, kshema the keeping safe of what one has. Even today, to ask after a person’s yogakshema is to ask how life stands with them. Dhurandhara is the bullock that bears the dhura, the yoke, and so one who carries a load and keeps going. The first thing the verse says is that the yoke of everyone’s welfare rests on Shiva’s shoulder.

The compound drishtadrishtamatopadeshakritinah is taken in two ways. Drishta is what is seen, adrishta what is not seen, so one sense is that he has taught the doctrine covering both the visible and the invisible. The older ritual texts also divide the fruit of action into drishtaphala and adrishtaphala, the fruit seen in this world and the fruit that comes later. In that sense he is the one who has shown the way in respect of both this world and the next. Either reading sits well with the other words of the verse.

The three words bahyantaravyapin, sarvajna and dayakara are what make the question of the verse possible. To one who fills my inside as well, who knows all things, who is full of compassion, what can I newly make known? No work is left of setting out a request in detail, and the verse quietly loosens a common understanding of prayer. What remains is remembrance.

Antaranga means an inner limb, and in use it means the closest and most trusted person. Paramantaranga is then the nearest of all, the one within me. Verse 29 asked for a glance of grace and for teaching, verse 30 said that his own strength did not stretch to service, and verses 31 to 34 counted Shiva’s deeds. This verse withdraws speech and settles into a daily remembrance. The metre is shardulavikridita, a quarter of nineteen syllables with a pause after the twelfth.

If we reach the shop near home just as the shutter is coming down, the shopkeeper has already set out what we came for before we ask. There is no list left to hand over.

With those we have lived beside for many years, words grow fewer, and that is not distance. As there is less to explain, the tie grows lighter, and our prayer too may become smaller in the same way.
