Context and commentary on verse 44

The key to this verse is the word ‘panchamukha’. It is a name of five faced Shiva, and it is also a common name for the lion. Once the lion is heard in it, the whole verse turns into another picture: a beast with a deer held at its paw, that breaks elephants and tears tigers apart, before which no other animal will come, bright of body, lying in a cave. And the cave is my mind. A cave with a lion in it needs no other guard, which is why the verse ends by asking where fear could come from.

The Shaiva background matters too. The five faces of Shiva bear the names Sadyojata, Vamadeva, Aghora, Tatpurusha and Ishana, and are together called the panchabrahma. Tradition also matches the five faces with the five syllables of the panchakshari mantra. A deer in the hand is a common mark of his images. The story of his overcoming an elephant shaped demon, and the story behind the tiger skin he wears, appear in different forms in the Puranas, so it is better not to tie them to a single source.

‘Astajantuh’ is taken here in the sense that the other beasts are gone, which suits the picture of the lion. Some read it of Shiva as the one who brings creatures to their end, in his role as destroyer. It is natural to read the animals as inner states, the elephant as pride, the tiger as cruelty, the deer as a mind that will not stay in one place. The verse does not make these matches itself, though. They are the reader’s.

The last two words are ‘kuto bhih’, a question of two syllables. Verse 40 also ended with ‘bhitih kutah’, so the question returns here. It recalls the Upanishadic phrase ‘na bibheti kutaschana’, he fears nothing from anywhere. The view that fearlessness is a mark of liberation runs widely through Vedanta.

This verse is shorter than those around it, and its metre is different. Counting the syllables gives eleven in the odd quarters and twelve in the even ones. A metre whose odd and even quarters are of different measure is called an ardhasama vritta. Works on prosody name this measure malabharini and many place it in the aupacchandasika family. Whatever the name, the short lines make the verse finish quickly, and that briskness suits the question it ends on.

For life today

Standing at night in a hospital lift with a report in hand, the mind runs to places it need not go. Before the floor we want arrives, we have already counted several of the worst possibilities.

Fear grows smaller then, not because of soothing words but because we know someone is with us. That is what the verse is saying too. When something steady is present inside, the rest does not look so large. This is no treatment for an illness. It is a way of being with fear.
