Context and commentary on verse 12.5
Both paths reach him, the difference is in the struggle. Sridhara Swami says just this: if the second group too reaches you, why are the first superior? The answer is the difference between hardship and ease. For those who take the body to be themselves, it is hard to stay always turned inward. Shankara unfolds ‘adhikatara’, greater, finely: those who work for the Lord also have their struggle, but for the worshippers of the imperishable, who must give up identification with the body itself, it is greater still.
For Ramanuja ‘avyakta gatih’ is the movement of a mind that has the unmanifest as its object, and those who take the body to be the self reach it only with pain. Madhva explains this at length: the path that goes through worship of the unmanifest is very hard, and needs control of the senses, right conduct and devotion to Vishnu all together. But even without worship of the unmanifest the devotees of the Lord gain liberation, for he alone is the giver of liberation. He himself supplies the means his devotees need, and so, he says, their path is the easier one.

For life today
Many paths to one goal, but not all are equally easy for everyone. Choosing the path that suits one’s own nature is wisdom.
The path to health is the same. For some it is walking, for some swimming, for some yoga postures. The best exercise is the one we can keep up without stopping.
