Context and commentary on verse 12.1
The twelfth chapter opens with a question. Sridhara Swami gives its background like this: at the end of the previous chapter the words ‘matkarmakrin matparamah’ declared the excellence of the path of devotion. But words in the seventh chapter such as ‘tesham jnani nityayuktah’ (7.17) had declared the excellence of the path of knowledge too. If both are excellent, which is greater? To settle this between worship of the Lord with attributes and worship of the attributeless, he says, is the purpose of this chapter.
The acharyas part ways at the very question of what ‘the imperishable, the unmanifest’ is. For Shankara it is the imperishable Brahman beyond all adjuncts, not an object of the senses. Those who worship it are renunciates who have given up all desires and all action. For Ramanuja ‘akshara’ is the pratyagatma, the essential nature of the individual self, which is not manifest to the eye and the other senses, and ‘yogavittama’ means those who reach their goal most quickly. For Madhva the ‘avyakta’ here is the principle of Shri that bears the name avyakta. He quotes the Samaveda: ‘upasya tam shriyam avyaktasamjnam’, having worshipped that Shri called the unmanifest. This chapter, he says, shows that worship of the Lord is higher than worship of the unmanifest, and then gives the means to it.

Whether to worship God with a form or to meditate on the formless principle is a question still in many minds today. Arjuna asks it directly.
Elders who do puja and younger people who only meditate may live in the same home. In the verses that follow we shall see that this chapter regards both with respect.
