Context and commentary on verse 12.13
From here to the end of the chapter comes the famous list of the marks of a devotee. According to Sridhara Swami these eight verses give the qualities that quickly bring the Lord’s grace. The order he gives to the first three words is lovely: no hatred towards those above oneself, friendship with equals, compassion for those below. For Shankara ‘adveshta’ is one who does not hate even those who cause him suffering, for he sees all beings as his own Self. ‘Kshami’ is one who stays unmoved even when abused or struck.
The acharyas part on whom this list describes. For Shankara it describes the renunciate who worships the imperishable and gives fearlessness to all beings. For Ramanuja it describes the karma yogi devoted to the self. His explanation of ‘adveshta’ is profound: one who reflects that those who hate and harm him do so, prompted by the Lord, in keeping with his own past faults, and so cultivates friendship even towards them, and shows compassion to them when they are in sorrow. Madhva’s comment on this verse is not in our source text.

For life today
Sridhara Swami’s order applies directly to the workplace: no envy at the success of seniors, friendship with colleagues, compassion for juniors and for patients.
When the two burdens of ‘mine’ and ‘I’ are set down, forgiveness becomes easy. Before it lightens anyone else, it lightens the mind of the one who forgives.
