Context and commentary on verse 12.9
The second rung of the ladder: practice. Shankara’s definition is precise: withdrawing the mind from everywhere and placing it again and again on a single support is practice. Sridhara Swami makes it simpler still: bringing the scattered mind back again and again and remembering me.
Ramanuja describes the object of practice as the ocean of his qualities: countless auspicious qualities such as beauty, gracious accessibility, tenderness, compassion, sweetness, depth and generosity. Remembering them again and again with overflowing love is his yoga of practice. If it does not come at once, he says, the mind grows steady step by step in this way. For life today
The mind runs, that is its nature. Practice is not stopping it from running, but calmly bringing it back each time it runs.
In physiotherapy after a stroke the same movement is repeated again and again. Science tells us that through repetition the brain learns new pathways. The practice of the mind is the same.
